Jamaica, VA – Corey Almond of Appomattox, VA, and Derek Magee of Millsboro, DE, split Twin 17 lap wins in the Victory Lap Pro Late Models at Virginia Motor Speedway on Saturday, August 19, during week 10 of Dirt Series Championship weekly racing. In the first 17-lap feature, Billy Hubbard and Corey Almond led the field to green, with Hubbard grabbing the lead out of turn 2. On the next circuit, Almond dove under Hubbard to race side-by-side out of turn 2. Out of turn 4, Almond took the lead over Hubbard at the line. Behind the leaders, the battle for third is going strong between Chuck Bowie, Derek Magee, and Nick Davis. Point leader Jeremy Pilkerton would work his way back to the battle for fifth by lap eight after spinning on lap 3. With the laps winding down, Hubbard tried several times to get by Almond for the lead, the last time coming to the checkered flag with Almond holding on to take the win. Hubbard, Derek Magee, Jeremy Pilkerton, and Chuck Bowie would round out the top five. After a five-car invert, Chuck Bowie and Jeremy Pilkerton would lead the field to green, with Bowie sliding up the track and allowing Derek Magee to get to the inside, taking the lead at the line. Once at front, Magee began to pull away from Bowie, who had Hubbard working to get second. On lap 7, Bowie slid up the track in turn 2 to give Hubbard the space he needed to take second. Hubbard could never mount of charge for the lead as Magee kept a great pace and went on to win in his first time at the track. Rounding out the top five were Hubbard, Bud Stinson, Chuck Bowie, and Corey Almond. In the Truckin Thunder 25 lap feature, Adam Breeden of Standardsville, VA, and Tim Shelton of Fredericksburg, VA, led the field to green, with Shelton taking the lead out of turn 2. Shelton pulled away from the battle for second between Matt Meads of Elizabeth City, NC, Breeden, and Bret Adkins of Saluda, VA. Adkins would work his way into second and set out to catch Shelton. By lap 9, Adkins had cut the lead to a car length. As the two raced into turn 1, Shelton would blow a motor handing the lead to Adkins. Once out front, Adkins would comfortably go on to take his third win of the season over Steve Causey, Adam Breeden, Tommy Upshaw, and Blake Adkins. In the Budweiser Modified 25-lap feature, Bret Hamilton of Powhatan, VA, grabbed the lead from Sam Lamborgini of Hayes, VA, on lap two with an outside move in turn 2. In the Joe Hudson’s Collision Centers Limited Stock 20 lap feature, Jacob Buie and Cory Bradley led the field to green, with Bradley taking the lead. Johnny Brooks had to start eighth after winning the last two races, but that fact didn’t keep him from the front very long as he grabbed the lead on lap 5 from Bradley. Overton Scores $20,000 to win Aaron’s King of the Commonwealth presented by Essex Concrete Win; Davenport Takes $3000 FASTRAK Pro Late Model Win

Overton Scores $20,000 to win Aaron’s King of the Commonwealth presented by Essex Concrete Win; Davenport Takes $3000 FASTRAK Pro Late Model Win

(PR Contribution from Roby Helm) Jamaica, VA – Brandon Overton of Evans, GA drove the Randy Weaver Racing #116 to its second straight Aaron’s King of the Commonwealth presented by Essex Concrete win on Saturday night and pocketed $20,000 in the Aaron’s King of Commonwealth at Virginia Motor Speedway. Overton battled with Jonathan Davenport of Blairsville, GA early and often before taking the lead for good on lap 28 of the 60-lap race. “That race car could have driven itself around there tonight; Jonathan (Davenport) showed me how to get around turn one and I got behind in lapped traffic and then turned it around on him later,” commented Overton in victory lane. Overton added “I just got my first $10,000 win and now a $20,000 win, it is kinda unreal I can’t thank Randy Weaver and the crew for giving me the chance to drive this car.” After starting on the outside of the front row, Davenport took the lead from polesitter Overton with a crossover move to the inside coming off the second turn on the first lap that saw Marlar, Madden and Hubbard in third through fifth respectively. One crossover move is worth another, as Overton returned the favor on Davenport to take the lead on lap two, as McDowell got by Hubbard for the fifth spot. The caution flag was unfurled for the first time on lap three when 2016 ULTIMATE SE Rookie of the Year Glenn Elliott spun in turn four. Marlar gave up the third spot on the track to pit under caution. Overton pulled in front of Davenport on lap seven, and Madden worked his way back around Hubbard for the third spot. Davenport made an inside move on Overton coming off the fourth turn on lap nine to take the lead. Hubbard and Madden were still contesting the third spot, with Hubbard reclaiming the position on the 11th lap. Davenport reached the cars on the tail end of the lead lap on lap 13, and McDowell got around Madden to take the fourth spot on lap 15. Overton chased down Davenport in lapped traffic, and began to challenge for the lead on lap 20. McDowell and Madden got by Hubbard to move up to third and fourth respectively on lap 20. Davenport was able to keep Overton behind him in lapped traffic, but once they had clear race track in front of them, Overton dove to the inside going into turn three on lap 28 to take the lead from Davenport. McDowell then closed on Davenport and they raced side-by-side for second on lap 30. Elliott brought out the caution flag for a second time on lap 32 to bunch up the field for a restart. By lap 35, Overton had pulled out to a half straightaway lead over McDowell. Marlar moved into the top five again on lap 38 when he got around Ferguson. The final caution flag of the race came out on lap 44 for debris in turn four. Overton led McDowell, Davenport, Marlar, Madden, Ferguson and Hubbard double-file back to the green flag. Marlar passed Davenport for the third spot on lap 45, and with ten laps to go, Overton had once again opened up a half straightaway lead over McDowell. Overton found himself in lapped traffic on lap 53. Overton had increased his lead over McDowell to a full straightaway on lap 55. At the checkered flag, Overton was out of sight of McDowell and took the checkered flag with a 4.175 second margin of victory. In the FASTRAK Racing Pro Late Model $3000 to win feature Jonathan Davenport of Blairsville, GA, one of only a few drivers pulling double duty, returned to his dirt late model roots Saturday night and won the Aaron’s King of the Commonwealth presented by Essex Concrete 40. After starting on the outside of the front row for the main event, Davenport took the lead and never looked back. The driver known as “Superman” led all 40 laps for the win driving the C&H Paving Barry Wright “House Car.” “We’re off to a good start this year with our Chevrolet Performance Circle Track Engine program, as we’re three for three so far this season,” Davenport said. “Now, if we could just get some of that success to rub off on our super late model program we would be in good shape.” A pair of multi-car wrecks in turn one on the first two attempts to start the race accounted for two of the five caution flags in the event. Once everyone settled into a race pace, Davenport took the lead from his outside front row starting spot, followed by polesitter Ford, Justin Williams, Ron Parker of Belwood, NC in the Schaeffer Oil Rocket and Nance. Parker passed Williams for third on lap two, and by lap seven, Davenport had opened up a half straightaway lead on Ford. By the ninth lap, Davenport caught the cars on the tail end of the lead lap, but that didn’t slow him down at all. Williams began to fade a little on lap ten, as Nance passed him for fourth, and Knight got by him for the fifth spot on lap 12. Nance had a good run going, as he worked his way around Parker for the third position on the 14th tour. The field slowed for a caution flag on lap 16 when Beachler stalled in turn one. The double-file restart saw Davenport leading Ford, Nance, Parker, Knight, Bare, Justin Williams, Arthur, Hicks and Frankie Beard of Hartwell, GA in the Jessica Cornett Racing/CMP Automotive Mastersbilt in the second through tenth spots respectively for the restart. On the restart, Ford pushed up high in turn four, and hit the guardrail on the front straightaway. That caused Arthur to get sideways, and grab a handful of steering wheel. Arthur didn’t hit anyone, or anything, and the field stayed green with a major shuffle behind the leader Davenport. The caution flag came back out on lap 19 when teammates Matthew Quade of Mechanicsville, MD in the Northern Neck Chevrolet Rocket and Jared Powell of Scottsville, VA in the Northern Neck Chevrolet Rocket tangled with Corey Almond of Appomattox, VA in the Ditch Witch Longhorn in turn two. On the restart, Bare got by Nance for the second spot in turn two, and Hornsby, after restarting in the seventh spot, made a big move and passed Nance for third on the front straightaway on lap 20. Nance fell back to fifth on lap 23 when Ford got by for the fourth spot. Davenport encountered lapped traffic on lap 28 with a 15 car-length lead on Bare. By lap 30, Davenport had once again opened back up a half straightaway lead. Debris in turn four on lap 33 lit up the yellow bulb for a final time. With the field bunched up single file behind him, Davenport was once again up to the task, and led the seven lap dash to the finish. The Speedway will return to racing next Saturday April 15th and host week 2 of the Aaron’s Dirt Series Championship weekly racing action featuring the Victory Lap Pro Late Model, Truckin Thunder Sportsman, Budweiser Modified and Collision One Limited Stock Car divisions. Almond, Joe Ender, Neal Hudgins and Davis Lipscombe rounded out the top five. Josh Harris and Joey Polevoy lead the Budweiser Modified division to green with for their 25 lap feature with Harris the leader. On the next circuit Polevoy would jump outside Harris to take the lead. On lap 14 Mike Reynolds would begin to put pressure on Polevoy for the top spot. For the next six laps the two raced virtually side by side until lap 21 when Polevoy would pull up in turn 4 with mechanical issues. Reynolds would then hold off several challenges by Matt Quade before getting the win. Quade, Matt Marshall, Brain Maxey and Josh Harris rounded out the top five. The caution filled Truckin Thunder Sportsman feature turned out to be one of the best races of the night. Chad Beahr and Junior Carter led the field to green with Carter taking the top spot followed by Jeremiah Marshall in second. The two raced nose to tail for most of distance until Marshall began working the inside of Carter. On lap 20 Marshall took the top spot away from Carter only to give it back the next lap. Opening Night wins go to J. Williams, Arthur, Quade, Shelton and Torbox

Jamaica, VA – What looked to be a cold and rainy day turned out to be a great night for racing at Virginia Motor Speedway for WRAR / WNNT Night and the opening night of Virginia Army National Guard Dirt Series action. Taking home wins were Justin Williams (Victory Lap Late Models), Walker Arthur (Aaron’s Pro Late Models), Matt Quade (Budweiser Modifieds), Hunter Shelton (Truckin Thunder Sportsman) and Andrew Torbox (Collision One Limited Stock Cars). In the Victory Lap Late Model 35 lap feature Billy Hubbard and Anthony Kincaid led the field to green with Hubbard taking the top spot on the drop of the green flag. Hubbard would go unchallenged until lap 9 when defending champion Justin Williams would begin to work on Hubbard for the lead. The two raced side by side for the next two laps before Williams took over the top spot. On the next circuit Williams would get into a lapped car and the ensuing spin collected both Hubbard and Walker Arthur sending both to the infield. On the restart Troy Williams would rocket away from the field and looked like his was on his way to the win that is until Justin Williams began his charge back to the front. With the laps winding down Justin Williams would get up on the cushion and reel in the leader. On lap 28 Troy Williams made a slight mistake in turn 2 allowing Justin Williams to get to his inside and take over the top spot. Once out front Justin Williams would go on to take the win followed by Troy Williams, John Staton, Anthony Kincaid and Petie Coffey rounding out the top five. In the first ever race for the Aaron’s Pro Late Models Neal Hudgins and Paul McGinley led the field to green with the field getting three wide right out the gate. Caution would come out necessitating a complete restart. On the restart McGinley would get a better start and grab the lead out of turn 2. On lap 3 Walker Arthur rocketed to the inside of McGinley to take over the top spot. Arthur would work out to a sizeable lead while Daniel Baggerly worked his way to second. Once in the runner-up spot Baggerly set out to catch Arthur. Baggerly would pull to within a couple of car lengths but that was a close as he could get as Arthur would go on to collect the checkers with Baggerly, McGinley, Davis Lipscombe and Hudgins rounding out the top five. The Budweiser Modified 25 lap feature may have been the most exciting race of the night as Matt Marshall, Jimmy Duncan and Matt Quade battled door to door for much of the feature. Joey Polevoy and Marshall led the field to green with Marshall jumping out to the lead. For the first 12 laps Duncan shadowed Marshall until he could finally get to his inside on lap 10. On lap 12 he finally took the lead but only by inches over Marshall. Marshall would take the lead back on the next circuit and would race door to door with Duncan over the top spot on lap 18. Not to be outdone Matt Quade made his way past Marshall and set out to catch Duncan. On 22 Quade got inside Duncan as the two exited turn 2. They raced side by side for the next two laps until Duncan bobbled in turn 2 on the final lap allowing Qaude to go on to the win followed by Duncan, Joey Polevoy, Matt Marshall and Rayn Toole rounding out the top five. In the caution filled Truckin Thunder Sportsman 25 lap feature Hunter Shelton used an inside move on then leader Davey Pullen to take over the lead. The multiple cautions were the only thing that allowed the rest of the field to get close to Shelton and he dominated the event for the win. Rookie Jeremiah Marshall, Brett Adkins, Macy Causey and James Bunn rounded out the top five. In the Collision One Limited Stock 20 lap feature defending champion Brandon Sandridge used a three wide pass in traffic to take the lead and go on to a sizeable lead. But on the white flag Sandridge would blow a right rear tire going down the backstretch. Sandridge tried to stay out front but as the field came to the checkered flag rookie Andrew Torbox was able to sneak by for his career victory. Brian Bradley, Brandon Sandridge, James Givens with a flat left front and Ben Lowry rounded out the top five. The speedway will take next Saturday April 26th off due to the NASCAR races at Richmond International Raceway and return to racing on Saturday may 3rd for Truckin Thunder Scout Night presented by the Virginia Army national Guard.
