Nine Winners in Ten Features on Xtra 99.1 Night

Jamaica, VA – Great weather for Xtra 99.1 Night at Bill Sawyer’s Virginia Motor Speedway led to an awesome night of racing with nine different winners in ten features. In the Victory Lap Late Model division twin features both John Staton and Justin Williams dominated on way to their wins. Staton took the lead in the first feature on the opening lap and pulled away from the field surviving a late caution to take his second win of the season. In the second feature Justin Williams battled side by side with Bubba Hubbard taking the lead on lap 2. Once out front Williams dominated the remainder of the distance for his seventh win of the season. Other winners included Walker Arthur (Aaron’s pro Late Model), mark Parks (Aaron’s Pro Late Model), Mike Reynolds (Budweiser Modified) swept both features, Brett Adkins (Truckin Thunder Sportsman), Matt Ashworth (Truckin Thunder Sportsman) picked up his career first, Shawn Otey (Collision One Limited Stock) and James Givens (Collision One Limited Stock). In the first feature for the Victory Lap Late Models Anthony Kincaid and John Staton led the field to green with Staton rocketing to the lead out of turn 2. Staton was on cruise control until the races only caution on lap 12 set up a three lap dash for the win. On the restart once again darted out to a sizeable lead taking his second win on the season. Rounding out the top five were Joe Ender, Billy Tucker, Stephen Childress and Justin Williams. In the second Victory Lap Late Model feature the story was pretty much the same just a different driver dominating. Billy Hubbard and Justin Williams led the field to green. The two raced side by side back to the line with Hubbard leading by inches. As they exited turn 2 on the next lap Williams rocketed off the corner to take control of the top spot. The only thing that was able to slow Williams were the five cautions. On final restart on lap nine Joe Ender tried to get under the leader in turn 1 only to have Williams pull away out of turn 2. Williams would dominate the remaining laps on way to his seventh win of the season. Rounding out the top five were Ender, Walker Arthur, John Staton and Billy Tucker. In the Aaron’s Pro Late Models Mark Parks and Walker Arthur led the field to green for the first 15 lap feature. Arthur would grab the lead out of turn 2 with Tyler Bare following into second. Bare would challenge Arthur on lap 3 but that would be as close as he would get as Arthur turned up the wick and went on to the win followed by Bare point leader Bobby Thompson, Mark Parks and Ricky Wells rounded out the top five. In the second feature for the Aaron’s Pro Late Models Mark Parks jumped out to the lead as they went three wide behind him for second. Tyler Bare and Walker Arthur battled side by side for second with Arthur finally grabbing the spot on lap 8. Caution came out on lap 11 closing the field on Park’s rear bumper. On the restart Arthur peaked to the inside but couldn’t make the pass. Parks would fend off several challenges over the final four laps to take home his second win of the season. Arthur, Bare, Thompson and Ricky Wells rounded out the top five. Lance Grady and Gary Long led the Budweiser Modified division to green with Grady securing the top spot. Grady would lead until he missed his mark in turn 1 and hit the wall ending his night. That handed the lead over to Michael Reynolds for the restart. Remolds would pull away from the field as Matt Marshall and Matt Quade battled side by side for second. That battle allowed Reynolds to pull away and go on to the win. Marshall, Quade, Gary Long and Stephen Quade rounded out the top five. What looked to be a runaway win by point leader Matt Qaude in the second 15 lap feature for the Budweiser Modifieds turned into a two race sweep for Mike Reynolds. Quade and Gary Long led the field to green with Quade taking the lead and pulled away from the field. Quade had worked to a full straight lead when caution would come out on lap 12 setting up a three lap dash for the win. On the restart Quade pulled away by a couple car lengths and looked to be on his way to yet another win. On the final lap Quade’s car had an engine failure allowing Reynolds to cruise by and to his second win of the night. Josh Harris, Matt Quade, Matt Marshall and Brian Maxey rounded out the top five. In the first 15 lap feature for the Truckin Thunder Sportsman Davey Pullen and Brett Adkins led the field to green with Adkins taking the lead out of turn 2. Adkins would pull away from the field with Jeremiah Marshall working to chase him down in traffic. Adkins would dominate and to score his third win of the season. Marshall, Pullen, Hunter Shelton and Matt Ashworth the rounded out the top five. It took two tries to get the second feature for the Truckin Thunder Sportsman underway with Jeremiah Marshall take control of the top spot on the first lap. By lap 4 eighth starting Brett Adkins had worked his way to second and the bumper of Marshall. A caution on lap 5 closed the whole field up on Marshall’s bumper for the restart. On the restart Marshall and Adkins pulled away. On the next circuit Marshall spun in turn 1 with a little help from Adkins sending both drivers to the rear of the field. Davey Pullen led the next lap with James Snead looking to his inside. The two raced side by side into turn 1 with Pullen spinning to bring out the caution. On the restart Snead held control of the lead. On lap 9 Snead’s car pulled up with mechanical issues handing the lead over to Matt Ashworth. Behind the leader Marshall and Adkins had worked their way through the field to second and third. Ashworth would have just enough to hold off Adkins for his career first win at Virginia Motor Speedway. Adkins, Marshall, Carl Vaughan and Macy Causey rounding out the top five. In the first feature for the Collision One Limited Stock Car division Shawn Otey took the lead on the opening lap with Brandon Sandridge and David Bowler in tow. With the battle behind him Otey was able to go on to pick up his second win of the season. Ryan Hutchens, David Bowler, James Givens and Brandon Sandridge rounded out the top five. In the second Collision One Stock Car feature James Givens and David bowler led the field to green with Givens rocketing to a huge lead. Two late cautions allowed Shawn Otey to take several shots at Givens for the lead but Givens was abelto hold on for his fourth win of the season. Rounding out the top five were Brian Bradley, Otey, Ryan Hutchens and Stephanie Stallings. The speedway will be in action next Saturday August 16th to host Chandler Chevrolet Night. Childress and Ender Score Career first Late Model Victories; H. Shelton, Adkins, C. Arnold, Duncan, Sandridge and Givens also pick up wins

Jamaica, VA – It only took rookie Stephen Childress of St. Stephens Church, VA six races into his late model career to pick up his first win in the ultra-competitive Victory Lap Late Model division at Bill Sawyer’s Virginia Motor Speedway on Truckin Thunder Scout Night presented by the Virginia Army National Guard. Childress grab the lead in the first twin 20 on the opening circuit. On lap 3 Justin Williams looked to get inside Childress in turn 3 only to be turned away. Childress then held off several challenges by Billy Tucker and then pulled away to win comfortably. Billy Tucker, Tim Shelton, Joe Ender and Anthony Kincaid rounded out the top five. In a night of first for the late model division Joe Ender held off Billy Tucker and Justin Williams in a great battle to earn his career first Victory Lap Late Model victory. Ender grabbed the lead on the opening green flag with Tucker in tow. On lap 2 Tucker got inside Ender in turn 1 taking the lead out of turn 4. The battle for the lead then got heavy as Tucker, Ender and Williams waged a three car battle for the top spot. On lap 13 Ender went outside Tucker out of four taking over the top spot by inches at the line. Ender went on to score his career first win followed by Williams, Anthony Kincaid, Tim Shelton and David Padula. Padula won both Fastrak Pro Late Model events. Chris Arnold of Chester, VA picked up the lead on Lap 6 of the Budweiser Modified first event when then leader Jimmy Duncan got caught up in another drivers spin sending him to the rear for the restart. That was all Arnold needed as he went onto hold off his dad Dan Arnold on a green, white, checkered finish to pick up the victory. Rounding out the top five were Matt Quade, Michael Reynolds and Bret Hamilton. In the second race for the Budweiser Modifieds Jimmy Duncan set the pace by taking the top spot on the opening circuit. Multiple cautions plagued the beginning of the event allowing Brett Hamilton several shots at Duncan for the lead. Duncan pulled away for the victory as Hamilton and Matt Quade battled over second spot with Hamilton claiming the position. Quade, Brian Dobie and Matt Ashworth rounded out the top five. In the first Truckin Thunder Sportsman 15 lap event Thomas Rose took the lead on the opening lap with Hunter Shelton in tow. Hunter got inside Rose in turn 1 on lap 4 to take over the top spot. Once out front Shelton pulled away as Junior Carter and Brett Adkins battled over second. Shelton would go on to score the win with Carter, Adkins, Thomas Rose and James Snead rounding out the top five. It was a different story in race two for the Truckin Thunder Sportsman as James Snead lead the first circuit until Brett Adkins swept around his outside in turn 1 for the lead. Once out front Adkins put in on cruise control and would go on to score his third win of the season. Following Adkins to the checkers were James Snead holding off Hunter Shelton for second with Thomas Rose and Tommy Upshaw rounding out the top five. In the first race for the Collision One Limited Stock Cars it looked as if David Bowler would pick up his career first victory but on lap 10 Brandon Sandridge got inside Bowler coming out of two and dragged raced back to the line where he took over the lead and went over to get the win. Bowler, Wesley Givens, Brian Maxey and Shawn Otey rounded out the top five. In the second race for the Collision One Limited Stock Cars Travis Hopkins led first lap and a half before Wesley Givens worked under him for the lead. Once Givens got out front he pulled away with Bowler, Sandridge and Maxey in tow. As the laps wore down Bowler began to reel in the leader Givens but there just not enough laps and Givens would go on to the win. Bowler, Sandrige, Maxey and Hopkins would round out the top five. 2nd Annual Dirtwood Nationals Pinewood Derby and Scout Night Saturday June 1st

2nd Annual Dirtwood Nationals Pinewood Derby and Scout Night Saturday June 1st

Jamaica, VA – If you have ever been involved in a pinewood derby you know how exciting it is not only for the kids but for the adults. Saturday June 1st Bill Sawyer’s Virginia Motor Speedway will bring that excitement and fun to the speedway as it hosts the 2nd Annual Truckin Thunder Dirtwood Nationals Pinewood Derby presented by the Virginia Army National Guard. “We are extremely excited to host this event and to help raise money and awareness for ChildHelp. We have to thank Tom and Judy Brooks of Truckin Thunder for the amount of effort they put into this event and for being success a great sponsor,” commented General Manager Clarke Sawyer. The event will run as part of Scout Night at the Races. Gates will open at 3pm for registration with the Dirtwood National Pinewood Derby starting at 4pm. The Virginia Army National Guard will also have a “Pit Crew” Challenge set up under the grandstands for all in attendance to participate. After the Dirtwood Nationals all Scouts (Boy Scouts, Cub Scouts and Girl Scouts) if wearing their uniform, will get free admission to enjoy a night of full sized dirt car racing. During the evenings festivities the Speedway will also help in raising money and awareness for the charity ChildHelp®. “I can’t wait for this year’s Dirtwood Nationals event on June 1st. Even with two re-schedules last year the event was a success. Pairing a pinewood derby event with a full scale racing night at Virginia Motor Speedway is a natural. Participants from the local Scouting Community and Virginia Motor Speedway’s racing family will make for a fun-filled evening that also will raise money for one of my favorite charities, ChildHelp®. I feel fortunate to have one of the ChildHelp Villages here in Virginia. Helping them with their work of rehabilitating and caring for severely abused and neglected children is very important to me,” commented Truckin Thunder owner Tom Brooks. There will be three divisions for the Dirtwood Nationals, Scouts, fans and Virginia Motor Speedway competitors. A champion will be crowned in each division and then there will be a run-off to see who will be the overall Dirtwood Nationals Pinewood Derby Champion. Standard Scouting pinewood derby rules will govern the races. For anyone wanting to participate but not having a pinewood derby car, a limited quantity will be available for rent for a $10 donation to ChildHelp. For more information on the 2nd Annual Dirtwood Nationals and Scout Night call the track at (804) 758-1867.
