Williams Dominates on Way to Victory Lap Late Model Win; Arnold, Wood and Givens also winners

Jamaica, VA – The beginning of the Victory Lap Late Model feature at Bill Sawyer’s Virginia Motor Speedway began with a lot of promise as Stevie Long of Mechanicsville, MD and David Williams of Avenue, MD began a side by side battle for the lead that had the crowd on it’s feet. But good things sometimes come to an end way too soon. Long and Davis Lipscombe led the stout field to green with Long leading the first circuit with Williams right on his bumper. Williams would jump to the inside of Long in turn 1 as the two raced door to door with Williams nipping Long at the line for the lead on lap 3. Long would battle back on the outside and would take the lead back by inches on the next circuit. The two raced side by side over the next three laps before the races first and only caution of the night would come out for a two car spin in turn 2. While under caution Long’s car would come to a stop in turn 4 and would need assistance getting to pit road handing the lead to Williams. Long’s promising night would come to an end as he was unable to get back on the track. On the restart Williams pulled away from Davis Lipscombe and the rest of the field. The closest Limpscombe would get would be on lap 20 as the two worked traffic but it was all Williams as he cruised to the win in convincing style. “I hated to see Stevie (Long) fall out of the race, it was a blast racing him for the lead and I think the fans would have seen a lot more of the same side by side racing if he would have not broke,” commented Williams in victory lane. Rounding out the top five were Davis Lipscombe, Sommey Lacey, Matt Marshall and Scott Adams. In other action Tony Wood of New Kent, VA would hold off Roger Jamerson of Mechanicsville, VA on the final lap to pick up his first win of 2010 in the Truckin Thunder Sportsman division. In the Budweiser Modifieds Dan Arnold of Petersburg, VA would hold off Brian Maxey of King George, VA for the win and in the Collision One Limited Stock division James Givens of New Kent, VA picked up the victory....

Rain Forces Postponement of Steel Block Bandits Sanctioned Firecracker 30 Till Next Saturday July 17th

Jamaica, VA – All indications were that the first ever visit by the Steel Block Bandits to the ½ mile speed plant in Jamaica, VA was going to be a home run. Over the last two weeks officials from the Bandits and Virginia Motor Speedway were hearing from a multitude of competitors that had everyone expecting 40 plus cars for the series first event at the facility. It will have to wait another week as Mother Nature had other ideas with rains soaking the grounds and with more severe storms looming officials at VMS were forced to postpone the $2000 to win Revere Gas Firecracker 30 presented by Aaron’s to next Saturday July 17th. “This event was picking up a lot of steam with both competitors and fans, we were very excited about possibilities of the first ever visit to our facility by the Steel Block Bandits, but with the rain and the forecast for more severe storms on the way we are forced to reschedule the event for next Saturday July 17th and we hope that we will still see a record car count for the Steel Block Bandits first event next weekend,” commented track General Manager Clarke Sawyer....

Tom Cohick takes home hardware in Victory Lap Late Models; Doggett, Maxey and Enders also visit victory lane

Jamaica, VA – The string of bad luck finally came to an end for “The Faster Pastor” Tom Cohick of Gloucester, VA as he picked up his first win of the 2010 season in the Victory Lap Late Model division at Bill Sawyer’s Virginia Motor Speedway. Although he led 34 of the 35 laps the win didn’t come easy for Cohick as he had to fend off the advances by both Ben Bowie and Scott Adams during the 35 lap affair. Cohick and Bowie would lead the field to green with Cohick taking command from the outside to pace the first lap. Bowie would take several shots at Cohick for the lead but had to go on the defense as Davis Lipscombe and Adams began to put on the pressure for the second spot. On lap 14 point leader Stevie Long, who went into the night leading the points, came to a stop in turn 4 with a flat tire. In the restart Adams began to look for a way around Cohick using every inch of the track in the process. On lap 21 Adams would power around the outside of Cohick in turn 4 and take the lead at the line. It would be short lived as Cohick would regain the top spot on the next circuit when Adams jumped the cushion in turn 4. Over the remaining 12 laps Cohick would keep a two car length advantage over Adams in second as Tim Shelton and Bowie battle for third. Cohick would go on to take the win with Adams close behind in second and Bowie taking third from Shelton coming to the checkers. “We have been working really hard to get this win this year, we finally got the monkey off our back,” commented a very excited Cohick in victory lane. Rounding out the top five were Scott Adams, Ben Bowie, Tim Shelton and Joey Bounds. In other action Brian Maxey of King George, VA nipped Dan Arnold of Petersburg, VA at the line by .060 seconds to pick up his second Budweiser Modified victory. In the Truckin Thunder Sportsman Taylor Dogget of Ruther Glen, VA picked up his career first victory and in the Collision One Limited Stock Cars it was Joe Enders of Glen Allen, VA picking up his career first victory....
