Speedway Crowns 2017 Champions; Shelton crowned Aaron’s Dirt Series Champion

Jamaica, VA – Bill Sawyers Virginia Motor Speedway officially wrapped up the 2017 season by recognizing the top ten in each of the track’s divisions with special attention reserved for the 2017 champions. During the night’s events almost $36,000 in cash and prizes were awarded, of that almost $27,000 was in cash. Justin Williams of Concord, VA was crowned the 2017 Victory Lap Pro Late Model Champion for the second year in a row and received a check for $5,000 for his efforts. Williams also received a $500 certificate from the Joie of Seating, a custom calendar from Al Goulder Photography, his Championship helmet trophy and his Champions jacket from Hoosier Tire Mid-Atlantic. The title was Williams fifth in a row at Virginia Motor Speedway. Tim Shelton of Fredericksburg, VA was crowned the 2017 Truckin Thunder Sportsman Champion and received a check for $1,000 for his efforts. Jamerson also received a $500 certificate from the Joie of Seating, a custom calendar from Al Goulder Photography, his Championship helmet trophy and his Champions jacket from Hoosier Tire Mid-Atlantic. This was Shelton’s second Truckin Thunder Sportsman title. Joey Polevoy of Powhatan, VA was crowned the 2017 Budweiser Modified Champion for the second year in a row and received a check for $1,000, a $500 certificate from the Joie of Seating, a custom calendar from Al Goulder Photography, his Championship helmet trophy and his Champions jacket from Hoosier Tire Mid-Atlantic. James Givens of Henrico, VA was crowned the 2017 Collision One Limited Stock Car Champion and received a check for $700, a $500 certificate from the Joie of Seating, a custom calendar from Al Goulder Photography his Championship helmet trophy and his Champions jacket from Hoosier Tire Mid-Atlantic. This is Givens’ second Limited Stock title. During his speech Givens announced he would be moving up to the Victory Lap Pro Late Model division in 2018. The speedway also crowns an overall Aaron’s Dirt Series Champion which pits all four divisions against each other. Tim Shelton, on the strength of his five wins and his eight top 5’s, won the overall Championship and received a $2000 check and the special eagle trophy that goes along with winning the title. Aaron’s also presented Shelton with a 50” Phillips 4K Ultra HD television. Special achievement award winners for the 2017 season included: The Pitts Lumber Rookies of the Year were Matt Quade of Avenue, MD in Victory Lap Pro Late Models; Tyler Shipp of Mechancisville, VA in Truckin Thunder Sportsman; Tim Schulte of Troy, VA in Budweiser Modifieds and Trent Clemans of Providence Forge, VA in the Collision One Limited Stock Car division. Each winner received a plaque and $250. It was announced during the banquet that the season will start April 7, 2018 with Aaron’s Dirt Series Championship weekly racing and that the Aaron’s King of the Commonwealth (April 14), USA 100 presented by Commonwealth Motorsports (June 16), both sanctioned by the Ultimate Super Late Model Series, will once again pay $20,000 to win as will the season ending FASTRAK World Championship presented by James River Equipment (September 14–15) for FASTRAK Pro Late Models. Jamaica, VA – The speedway will return to racing Saturday August 26, 2017 to host Northern Neck Chevrolet | Collision One Back to School Night and week 12 of the Aaron’s Dirt Series Championship Weekly Racing season featuring the Victory Lap Pro Late Models, Budweiser Modifieds, Truckin Thunder Sportsman and Collision One Limited Stock Cars in action. Saturday August 26th the speedway, along with its sponsors, will be collecting food and donations for FeedMore and the Northern Neck Food Bank. For every five (5) non-perishable food items donated race fans will receive one (1) FREE general admission ticket to the night’s racing. There is no limit on the number of tickets you can get free. Speedway Cancels Racing for Saturday August 12th

Jamaica, VA – Overnight and morning rains along with the forecast for heavy rains during the remainder of the day have forced officials at Bill Sawyer’s Virginia Motor Speedway to cancel racing activities for Commonwealth Motorsports | XTRA 99.1 Night on Saturday Augusta 12, 2017. It is the speedway’s fourth rainout of the season. “It is never an easy decision to cancel an event, but with the overnight rains and the track still receiving rain it is evident that we will not be able to get in any racing today”, commented track General Manager Clarke Sawyer. The speedway will take a scheduled weekend off on Saturday August 19th and return to racing Saturday August 26, 2017 to host Northern Neck Chevrolet | Collision One Back to School Night and week 12 of the Aaron’s Dirt Series Championship Weekly Racing season featuring the Victory Lap Pro Late Models, Budweiser Modifieds, Truckin Thunder Sportsman and Collision One Limited Stock Cars in action. Speedway to Host Week 3 of Aaron’s Dirt Series Championship Action This Saturday April 22nd

Jamaica, VA – This Saturday April 22nd Virginia Motor Speedway will host week 3 of the Aaron’s Dirt Series Championship weekly racing action featuring the Victory Lap Pro Late Model, Truckin Thunder Sportsman, Budweiser Modified and Collision One Limited Stock Car divisions. After two weeks of championship action the rivalries are heating up early this year. Both Tyler Bare of Rockbridge Baths, VA (Victory Lap Pro Late Model) and Joey Polevoy of Powhatan, VA (Budweiser Modified) both have back to back victories to start the 2017 season. Both drivers will not be able to start any closer than eighth this weekend due to the track’s two win in a row rule. It should make for a very exciting night of racing. The Truckin Thunder Sportsman and Collision One Limited Stock Car divisions have been ultra-competitive and will be exciting to watch this Saturday once racing resumes. Overton Scores $20,000 to win Aaron’s King of the Commonwealth presented by Essex Concrete Win; Davenport Takes $3000 FASTRAK Pro Late Model Win

(PR Contribution from Roby Helm) Jamaica, VA – Brandon Overton of Evans, GA drove the Randy Weaver Racing #116 to its second straight Aaron’s King of the Commonwealth presented by Essex Concrete win on Saturday night and pocketed $20,000 in the Aaron’s King of Commonwealth at Virginia Motor Speedway. Overton battled with Jonathan Davenport of Blairsville, GA early and often before taking the lead for good on lap 28 of the 60-lap race. “That race car could have driven itself around there tonight; Jonathan (Davenport) showed me how to get around turn one and I got behind in lapped traffic and then turned it around on him later,” commented Overton in victory lane. Overton added “I just got my first $10,000 win and now a $20,000 win, it is kinda unreal I can’t thank Randy Weaver and the crew for giving me the chance to drive this car.” After starting on the outside of the front row, Davenport took the lead from polesitter Overton with a crossover move to the inside coming off the second turn on the first lap that saw Marlar, Madden and Hubbard in third through fifth respectively. One crossover move is worth another, as Overton returned the favor on Davenport to take the lead on lap two, as McDowell got by Hubbard for the fifth spot. The caution flag was unfurled for the first time on lap three when 2016 ULTIMATE SE Rookie of the Year Glenn Elliott spun in turn four. Marlar gave up the third spot on the track to pit under caution. Overton pulled in front of Davenport on lap seven, and Madden worked his way back around Hubbard for the third spot. Davenport made an inside move on Overton coming off the fourth turn on lap nine to take the lead. Hubbard and Madden were still contesting the third spot, with Hubbard reclaiming the position on the 11th lap. Davenport reached the cars on the tail end of the lead lap on lap 13, and McDowell got around Madden to take the fourth spot on lap 15. Overton chased down Davenport in lapped traffic, and began to challenge for the lead on lap 20. McDowell and Madden got by Hubbard to move up to third and fourth respectively on lap 20. Davenport was able to keep Overton behind him in lapped traffic, but once they had clear race track in front of them, Overton dove to the inside going into turn three on lap 28 to take the lead from Davenport. McDowell then closed on Davenport and they raced side-by-side for second on lap 30. Elliott brought out the caution flag for a second time on lap 32 to bunch up the field for a restart. By lap 35, Overton had pulled out to a half straightaway lead over McDowell. Marlar moved into the top five again on lap 38 when he got around Ferguson. The final caution flag of the race came out on lap 44 for debris in turn four. Overton led McDowell, Davenport, Marlar, Madden, Ferguson and Hubbard double-file back to the green flag. Marlar passed Davenport for the third spot on lap 45, and with ten laps to go, Overton had once again opened up a half straightaway lead over McDowell. Overton found himself in lapped traffic on lap 53. Overton had increased his lead over McDowell to a full straightaway on lap 55. At the checkered flag, Overton was out of sight of McDowell and took the checkered flag with a 4.175 second margin of victory. In the FASTRAK Racing Pro Late Model $3000 to win feature Jonathan Davenport of Blairsville, GA, one of only a few drivers pulling double duty, returned to his dirt late model roots Saturday night and won the Aaron’s King of the Commonwealth presented by Essex Concrete 40. After starting on the outside of the front row for the main event, Davenport took the lead and never looked back. The driver known as “Superman” led all 40 laps for the win driving the C&H Paving Barry Wright “House Car.” “We’re off to a good start this year with our Chevrolet Performance Circle Track Engine program, as we’re three for three so far this season,” Davenport said. “Now, if we could just get some of that success to rub off on our super late model program we would be in good shape.” A pair of multi-car wrecks in turn one on the first two attempts to start the race accounted for two of the five caution flags in the event. Once everyone settled into a race pace, Davenport took the lead from his outside front row starting spot, followed by polesitter Ford, Justin Williams, Ron Parker of Belwood, NC in the Schaeffer Oil Rocket and Nance. Parker passed Williams for third on lap two, and by lap seven, Davenport had opened up a half straightaway lead on Ford. By the ninth lap, Davenport caught the cars on the tail end of the lead lap, but that didn’t slow him down at all. Williams began to fade a little on lap ten, as Nance passed him for fourth, and Knight got by him for the fifth spot on lap 12. Nance had a good run going, as he worked his way around Parker for the third position on the 14th tour. The field slowed for a caution flag on lap 16 when Beachler stalled in turn one. The double-file restart saw Davenport leading Ford, Nance, Parker, Knight, Bare, Justin Williams, Arthur, Hicks and Frankie Beard of Hartwell, GA in the Jessica Cornett Racing/CMP Automotive Mastersbilt in the second through tenth spots respectively for the restart. On the restart, Ford pushed up high in turn four, and hit the guardrail on the front straightaway. That caused Arthur to get sideways, and grab a handful of steering wheel. Arthur didn’t hit anyone, or anything, and the field stayed green with a major shuffle behind the leader Davenport. The caution flag came back out on lap 19 when teammates Matthew Quade of Mechanicsville, MD in the Northern Neck Chevrolet Rocket and Jared Powell of Scottsville, VA in the Northern Neck Chevrolet Rocket tangled with Corey Almond of Appomattox, VA in the Ditch Witch Longhorn in turn two. On the restart, Bare got by Nance for the second spot in turn two, and Hornsby, after restarting in the seventh spot, made a big move and passed Nance for third on the front straightaway on lap 20. Nance fell back to fifth on lap 23 when Ford got by for the fourth spot. Davenport encountered lapped traffic on lap 28 with a 15 car-length lead on Bare. By lap 30, Davenport had once again opened back up a half straightaway lead. Debris in turn four on lap 33 lit up the yellow bulb for a final time. With the field bunched up single file behind him, Davenport was once again up to the task, and led the seven lap dash to the finish. $20,000 to win Aaron’s King of the Commonwealth Presented by Essex Concrete this Saturday April 8

Jamaica, VA – One of the most anticipated events of the year gets the green flag this Saturday April 8th with the running of the $20,000 to win Aaron’s King of the Commonwealth presented by Essex Concrete. Saturday April 8th Bill Sawyer’s Virginia Motor Speedway will host one of the most prestigious events in the country and the largest short track event in the State of Virginia. That means some of the best dirt late model drivers on the East Coast will be making the trip to the ½ mile speed plant located in Jamaica, VA. The event will be sanctioned by the Ultimate Super Late Model Series and will feature a 60 lap A-Main paying the winner a cool $20,000. The event will also feature a $3000 to win FASTRAK National Tour race for Pro (Crate) Late Model drivers. “If you are a fan of short track racing you do not want to miss this event; the best dirt late model racers on the East Coast will be vying for that huge $20,000 check in what is the biggest short track event in the State of Virginia,” commented track owner Bill Sawyer. Sawyer added, “we can’t thank Aaron’s and Essex Concrete enough for their sponsorship of this event, we could not put together such a phenomenal event without their support.” Last season Mother Nature decided on bringing a snowy weekend to the party causing officials to cancel the event. In 2015 Randy Weaver of Crossville, TN bested a stellar field of competitors, in what was an amazing race, to take home the $20,000 winner’s check in the Ultimate Super Late Model sanctioned Aaron’s King of the Commonwealth presented by Essex Concrete. In the FASTRAK National Tour event, local driver, Walker Arthur took home the win and $3000 winner’s check. The speedway is expecting a great field of cars this year for both events. Defending Champion Dennis “Rambo” Franklin of Gaffney, SC will lead the Ultimate Super Late Model contingent into battle against the Mid-Atlantic’s top drivers. Expected to compete are Chris Ferguson, Rick Elliott, Ricky Elliott, Austin Hubbard, Dale Hollidge, Jason Covert, Justin Williams and a host of other regional hot shoes. Admission price for adults is only $30, seniors (60+) $25; military (active/retired w/ proper I.D.) $20, students 11 – 17 years old $15 and children 10 and under admitted free. Pit passes will be $40 regardless of age and will get you a seat in the grandstands. 16” coolers are welcomed but no glass is allowed.
