Record Crowd Sees Eight Different Winners in Eight Races
Jamaica, VA – On a day that started out looking as if Mother Nature would win again the skies turned blue and provided a beautiful night for racing at Bill Sawyer’s Virginia Motor Speedway on Truckin Thunder Scout Night presented by the Virginia Army National Guard. With a packed house on hand the drivers didn’t disappoint as they put on a tremendous show for the record setting crowd with Billy Tucker of King George, VA besting Tim Shelton Fredericksburg, VA in a photo finish in the first Victory Lap Late Model 20 lap feature; while Scott Adams led flag to flag in the second late model feature to pick up this victory.
Other winners included Stephen Childress of St. Stephens Church, VA and Hunter Shelton of Fredericksburg, VA in Truckin Thunder Sportsman action. It was Shelton’s career first victory. In the Budweiser Modified division Jimmy Duncan of Fredericksburg, VA and Dan Arnold of Chester, VA getting the wins and in the Collision One Limited Stock Cars Wesley Givens of Mechanicsville, VA and Bobby Curtis of Richmond, VA picking up the victories. It was Curtis’s career first at the speedway.
In the first of two 20 lap events for the Victory Lap Late Model division Billy Tucker of King George, VA took over the top spot on lap 4 when then race leader Derick Quade broke coming out of turn 2 ending his night. Tucker would then battle with Tim Shelton for the top spot over the remaining 16 laps for the lead. On the white flag lap Shelton got went to the outside of Tucker in turn 1 with the two side by side to the checkers with tucker nipping Shelton at the lin by inches for his second win of the season. Rounding out the top five were David Puckett, Troy Williams and Justin Williams.
In the second 20 lap race for the Victory Lap Late Models two-time and defending late model champion Scott Adams of Chester, VA led flag to flag in picking up his third win of the season. Behind him Troy Williams made a lst lap pass of our turn 4 to take second by inches over David Puckett at the line. Billy Tucker and Tim Shelton rounded out the top five.
In the Truckin Thunder Sportsman division defending Sportsman champion Todd Traylor led the first six laps with Junior Carter and Stephen Childress in close pursuit. On lap seven The battle went three wide out of turn 2 for the lead with Childress taking the lead out of turn 4. That would be all Childress would need as he would go on to take the victory. Rounding out the top five were Junior Carter, Todd Traylor, J.R. Guy and Hunter Shelton.
In the second 15 lap event for the Truckin Thunder Sportsman Taylor Doggett would lead the first four laps with Hunter Shelton in tow. On lap 5 Shelton made his move to the inside of Doggett out of turn 4 and took the lead at the line. Shelton would have to fend off Doggett for two more restarts but would go on to take his career first win in front of the very enthusiastic crowd. Rounding out the top five were Taylor Doggett, Junior Carter, Brett Adkins and J.R. Guy.
The Budweiser Modifieds defending champion Dan Arnold paced the first seven laps before spinning in turn 2 handing the lead over to current point leader Jimmy Duncan. Duncan would hold off a couple of challenges by Mike Reynolds before seizing control and going on to score his third win of the season. Mike Reynolds, Brandon Galloway, Dan Arnold and Page Harrison rounded out the top five.
In the second 15 lap event for the Budweiser Modifieds Dan Arnold again led the field to green this time he didn’t make any mistakes and would hold off the challenges of Jimmy Duncan to collect the win. The action on the track was from Chris Arnold who worked his way from his 11th palce starting position to score a third place finish with Mike Reynolds and Brandon Galloway rounding out the top five.
In the Collision One Limited Stock Car division the father and son duo of Wesley and james Givens led the field to green with the son (Wesley) taking command on the opening circuit. Even though the field stayed close the younger Givens would hold off his father and the rest of the field for the win. Rounding out the top fiev were Brian Maxey, Brandon Sandridge and Bobby Curtis.
In the 12 lap finale for the Collision One Limited Stocks Bobby Curtis led flag to flag to pick up his career first win at the speedway. Curtis had to hold off Brian Maxey for the entire distance for the hard fought win. Rounding out the top five were Wesley Givens, Marty Coltrain and Brandon Sandridge.
In the speedway’s first ever Dirtwood Nationals Pinewood Derby Zac Linkous of Collinsville, VA and Pack 166 won the overall championship as well as the Scout division. Sierra Hollingsworth of Bealeton, VA won the Fans division and Hunter Shelton won the competitors division.
The speedway will take the weekend of August 25th off and return to racing Saturday September 1st to host Safety-Kleen, Collision One, Pepsi, WIGO Championship Night and week fifteen of Virginia Army National Guard Dirt Series action. The final weekly race night of the season will have be a special twin race night. It will be the final point paying events of the season and champions will be crowned in all four divisions.
The evenings events will include four divisions of exciting high octane, side by side dirt track racing. See the Victory Lap Late Model, Truckin Thunder Sportsman, Budweiser Modified and Collision One Limited Stock Car divisions in action.
Competitor gates for Saturday, September 1st will open at 4pm with spectator gates opening at 5pm. On track activities will begin at 6:30pm with hot laps.
Divisions scheduled to race on Saturday: Victory Lap Late Models (Twin 20 Laps); Budweiser Modifieds (Twin 15 Laps); Truckin Thunder Sportsman (Twin 15 laps) and the Collision One Limited Stock Cars (Twin 12 laps). All divisions will run Hot Lap Time Trials and Features.
Admission price for Adults $12, seniors (60+) $10; military (active/retired w/ proper I.D.) $8, students 13 – 17 years old $6, children 7 to 12 $4 and children 6 and under admitted free. We offer a family pass for $25 (two adults and two children 12 and under). Pit passes will be $20.
To enhance the fans racing experience the speedway has installed a short wave FM transmitter and all of the evening’s action can be heard at 95.5 FM. So bring your portable radio headset and enjoy hearing all the action.

Bill Sawyer’s Virginia Motor Speedway, an ASA Member Track, is a ½ mile dirt oval track is located on U.S. Route 17, eight miles north of Saluda, VA and 25 miles south of Tappahannock, VA in Jamaica, VA.
