Shelton Scores Second Victory of Season in Victory Lap Late Models; Doggett, Duncan and Adkins first time winners
Jamaica, VA – It was a bitter sweet win for the current Victory Lap Late Model point leader Tim Shelton of Fredericksburg, VA as he took over the lead on lap 32 of the 35 lap affair when then leader Davis Lipscombe of Mechanicsville, VA pulled to the pits with mechanical issues after dominating the first 32 laps of the event. Shelton chased Lipscombe for most of the night closing in when the two got into traffic, but it looked as if Lipscombe would motor to his first win of the season until engine woes would send him to the pit area handing the lead and win to Shelton.
“My heart goes out to Davis (Lipscombe) we are friends and I really wanted to see him get a win, I had mixed emotions when I saw him pull over to go to the pits. I want to win but if there is anyone that deserves a win it is Davis, commented Shelton in victory lane.
Jared Powell and Davis Lipscombe led the field to green with it quickly going three wide into turn 1 as Tim Shelton tried to jump to the lead from his third place starting position. Lipscombe would take the top spot and rocket to a comfortable lead.
On lap 16 the battle was for the fifth spot at Joe Ender looked inside Troy Williams for the spot. On lap 21 Lipscombe almost got into a lpaaed car narrowly missing him in turn 4. That allowed Shelton to close the gap, but that was as close as Shelton would get until lap 32 when Lipscombe’s car would experience mechanical issues forcing him to the pit area and handing the lead over to Shelton. Shelton would take control and go on to score his second victory of 2012 and extend his point lead. Rounding out the top five were Billy Tucker, Scott Adams, John Staton and Troy Williams. Joe Ender was the Pits Lumber rookie of the Race with his sixth place finish.
In other action Jimmy Duncan of Fredericksburg, VA picked up his first ever win in the Budweiser Modifieds; in the Truckin Thunder Sportsman feature Taylor Doggett led flag to flag but had to hold off a hard charging Brett Adkins of Gloucester, VA for his first win of 2012; and in the Collision One Limited Stock Car 20 lap feature Brett Adkins of Gloucester, VA took the lead on lap 9 and never looked back to get his the victory. In qualifying Stephen Childress of St. Stephens Church, VA set a new track record in the Truckin Thunder Sportsman division as did Bob Terry of Fredericksburg, VA in the Collision One Limited Stock Car division.
Budweiser Modifieds
James Sparks and Brandon Galloway led the field to green with Galloway securing the top spot and leading the first circuit. His lead was short lived as Jimmy Duncan would move to his inside out of turn 4 to take the lead at the line. Several cautions would close the field on Duncan’s bumper but each time someone tried to take the lead Duncan was up to the challenge.
Defending champion Dan Arnold put on a show for the fans coming from the rear of the field twice. Each time Arnold would work his way to the front. The final time Arnold took over the second spot in a heated battle with Mike Reynolds that went door to door before Arnold secured the spot on lap 21. Arnold tried to close in on Duncan for the lead but ran out of laps as Duncan went on to score his first victory at Virginia Motor Speedway. Rounding out the top five were Dan Arnold, Mike Reynolds, Aaron Harris and Kelly Samuels. Mike Reynolds was the Pitts Lumber Rookie of the Race with his third place finish.
Truckin Thunder Sportsman
J.R. Guy and Taylor Doggett led the field to green with Doggett leading the first lap. Behind him the action for second was intense. On lap 3 a caution came out when Stephen Childress and Davey Pullen got together on the backstretch battling for fourth. It took several tries to get the race back under green but when it did the battle for the lead heated up.
On lap 5 Brett Adkins got inside Guy for second and set out to catch the leader. By lap 22 Adkins had caught Doggett and began challenging for the lead. On several occasions Adkins tried to get inside Doggett for the lead, each time Doggett would close the door. With two to go Adkins made one last ditch effort to get the nose of his car inside Doggett but couldn’t make the pass and Doggett would go on to get the victory and be the fourth different winner in as many races. Rounding out the top five were Adkins, Junior Carter, Todd Traylor and J.R. Guy. Brett Adkins was the Pitts Lumber rookie of the Race with his runner-up finish.
Collision One Limited Stock Cars
Two former division champions went at each other for the win and in the end it was Brett Adkins ending up in victory lane. Brian Maxey and Adkins led the field to green with Maxey taking over the top spot out of turn 2.
On lap 3 Adkins worked himself inside Maxey to try and take the top spot but Maxey was up to the challenge, that is until lap 8 when Adkins worked inside Maxey in turn 3 and nipped him at the line to take the lead. Once out front Adkins began to pull away as Maxey, Stephen Childress and Bob Terry wrestled over the runner-up spot. On lap 17 Childress briefly took over second with an inside pass in turn 1 only to have Maxey do a cross over move to retake the spot.
Adkins would cruise the rest of the way for his first Collision One Limited Stock win of the season. Rounding out the top five were Maxey, Childress, Terry and Brandon Sandridge. Adkins win made it three different winners in three events. Bobby Curtis picked up the Pitts Lumber Rookie of the Race with his eighth place finish.
