Virginia Motor Speedway

Stevie Long Finally Gets Victory Lap Late Model Victory; Arnold, Jamerson and Adkins also get wins.

Jamaica, VA – During the month of July Stevie Long of Mechanicsville, MD had earned the name Mr. Heartbreak as he dealt with motor problems that took him out of the Championship point chase in the Victory Lap Late Model division at Bill Sawyer’s Virginia Motor Speedway. With a victory everything changed.

Tim Shelton and Tom Cohick led the field to green with Cohick leading the first circuit followed closely by Long. Two quick cautions both on lap 2 put Long right on Cohick’s bumper. On the restart Long tried to get inside Cohick but couldn’t make the pass. On the next circuit Long tried once again to get inside Cohick this time in turn 4 but once again Cohick was up to the challenge.

On lap 7 David Williams joined the battle for the lead. Over the next six laps the top three looked for ways around the others. On lap 14 Long got under Cohick once again in turn 2, this time the two touched with Long coming out with the lead. On the next lap Williams would get by Cohick for second and set out to reel in the leader.

On lap 18 Williams began to pressure Long for the lead. As the two raced through lapped traffic Long began to pull away. Over the final twenty laps Long worked traffic to perfection on way to his first victory of 2010.

“After the month of July we had it sure feels great to finally shake the monkey off our back. The track was awesome tonight you couldn’t ask for a better surface to race on, commented Long in victory lane.

Rounding out the top five were David Williams, Matt Marshall, Scott Adams and Davis Lipscombe.

In other action Dan Arnold of Petersburg, VA took home the victory in the Budweiser Modifieds. In the Truckin Thunder Sportsman Roger Jamerson of Mechanicsville, VA took home the victory and in the Collision One Limited Stock Cars Brett Adkins of Gloucester, VA got the victory.

In the Budweiser Modified 25 lap feature Page Harrison and Tony Quade led the field to green with current point leader charging from his sixth place starting spot to take the lead in turn for and lead the first circuit.

Two quick cautions found Dan Arnold on the bumper of Maxey for the restart. Once back under green Arnold began to apply pressure for the top spot. On lap 8 Arnold dove under Maxey in turn 4 and pulled door to door with Maxey holding on at the line. Over the next two laps Arnold tried high and low and on lap 11 Maxey and Arnold split a slower car with Maxey going high and Arnold low. As they exited turn 2 three wide Arnold emerged as the leader heading into turn 3.

Once out front Arnold began to pull away from the field. On lap 16 John Ferguson took over the third position from Page Harrison and set out for Maxey. With the rest of the field fighting for position Arnold would cruise to his third win in a row and take over the points lead in the process. Rounding out the top five were Brian Maxey, John Ferguson, Page Harrison and Brandon Galloway.

In the Truckin Thunder Sportsman 25 lap feature Tommy Upshaw and J.R. Guy led the field to green with Guy taking the top spot and leading the first lap. The next lap the races first caution came out for a big wreck in turn 1 involving Bubba Chandler, Michael Hayes and Carl Vaughan. All three drivers would be ok with Vaughan the only car to return to action.

On the restart Tony Wood began to dog Guy and in turn 4 dove under guy to take the lead at the line by inches. Once out front Wood would begin to pull away from the field. On lap 7 Roger Jamerson would take over the second spot and begin to reel in the leader. On lap 13 Wood and Jamerson split a lapped car in turn 4 coming to the line with Jamerson grabbing the lead by inches at the line. In turn 2 fought back on the outside to regain the lead but it was short lived as Jamerson would drive under Wood on lap 15 when Wood slide up turn 4 giving Jamerson the opening. Once out front Jamerson pulled away to take the win and extend his point lead. Rounding out the top five were Tony Wood, J.R. Guy, Davey Pullen and Michael Roop.
