Tom Cohick takes home hardware in Victory Lap Late Models; Doggett, Maxey and Enders also visit victory lane

Jamaica, VA – The string of bad luck finally came to an end for “The Faster Pastor Tom Cohick of Gloucester, VA as he picked up his first win of the 2010 season in the Victory Lap Late Model division at Bill Sawyer’s Virginia Motor Speedway.

Although he led 34 of the 35 laps the win didn’t come easy for Cohick as he had to fend off the advances by both Ben Bowie and Scott Adams during the 35 lap affair. Cohick and Bowie would lead the field to green with Cohick taking command from the outside to pace the first lap. Bowie would take several shots at Cohick for the lead but had to go on the defense as Davis Lipscombe and Adams began to put on the pressure for the second spot.

On lap 14 point leader Stevie Long, who went into the night leading the points, came to a stop in turn 4 with a flat tire. In the restart Adams began to look for a way around Cohick using every inch of the track in the process. On lap 21 Adams would power around the outside of Cohick in turn 4 and take the lead at the line. It would be short lived as Cohick would regain the top spot on the next circuit when Adams jumped the cushion in turn 4.

Over the remaining 12 laps Cohick would keep a two car length advantage over Adams in second as Tim Shelton and Bowie battle for third. Cohick would go on to take the win with Adams close behind in second and Bowie taking third from Shelton coming to the checkers.

“We have been working really hard to get this win this year, we finally got the monkey off our back, commented a very excited Cohick in victory lane.

Rounding out the top five were Scott Adams, Ben Bowie, Tim Shelton and Joey Bounds.

In other action Brian Maxey of King George, VA nipped Dan Arnold of Petersburg, VA at the line by .060 seconds to pick up his second Budweiser Modified victory. In the Truckin Thunder Sportsman Taylor Dogget of Ruther Glen, VA picked up his career first victory and in the Collision One Limited Stock Cars it was Joe Enders of Glen Allen, VA picking up his career first victory.

In the Budweiser Moidifed 25 lap feature Page Harrison and Kevin Fletcher led the field to green with Fletcher using the high side to perfection to lead the first lap. Fletcher would lead the first 14 laps before jumping the cushion in turn 2 and allowing Brian Maxey to get inside for the lead.

Once out side it looked as if Maxey would pull away unchallenged for the lead as James Marshall and Dan Arnold battled behind him for second. On alp 19 Arnold took away second from Marshall but was going to need the help of a caution to close the gap. That help came on lap 22 when a caution came out for two cars that had spun in turn 4.

On the restart Arnold kept pace with Maxey trying at each corner to get inside for the lead. On the white flag Arnold was right on Maxey’s bumper and in turn 3 Arnold slid under Maxey to challenge for the lead. The two raced out of turn 4 side by side with Maxey nipping Arnold by .060 seconds to get his second victory of 2010. Rounding out the top five were Dan Arnold, James Marshall, Page Harrison and Brandon Galloway.

In the Truckin Thunder 25 lap feature J.R. Guy and Shawn Otey led the field to green with Otey taking control to pace the first circuit. Otey would stretch his lead to five car lengths as they battled behind him second.

On lap disaster struck for Otey on lap 8 as he looped his car in turn 4 bringing out a caution. That handed the lead to Todd Traylor with Taylor Doggett, Roger Jamerson, Tony Wood and John Kirby the balance of the top five.

As in his pass for second on Jamerson, Doggett went out side of Traylor on the restart to take over the top spot. Once out front Doggett set sale in route to picking up his first career dirt victory, this only a week after picking up his career first asphalt victory the week before at South Boston Speedway. Rounding out the top five were Todd Traylor, Roger Jamerson, Tony Wood and John Kirby.

The Collision One Limited Stock Car 20 lap feature may have been the most exciting race of the season. From the drop of the green flag the racing went three wide with Brandon Sandridge lead the first lap. Sandridge would pace the first 5 laps before Joe Enders would grab the top spot with a pass in turn 1. By lap 8 eighteenth starting Brett Adkins had moved into third and looked to be on the move when he would go for a spin in turn 2 with help. On the restart Enders began to pull away form Sandridge and would go on to take his career first Collision One Limited Stock Car victory. Rounding out the top five were Brandon Sandridge, Marty Coltrain, Lee Overstreet and Brett Adkins.
