Bare Takes Steel Block Bandit Checkers; Maxey, Childress, Adkins repeat as winners

Jamaica, VA – It had been a while since his last visit to Bill Sawyer’s Virginia Motor Speedway but Booper Bare of Rockbridge Baths, VA still knew how to get around the ½ mile speedplant in Jamaica, VA. A strong field of 44 cars showed up for the second visit by the Steel Block Bandits to Bill Sawyer’s Virginia Motor Speedway for the $3000 to win Firecracker 30. In what was a cautioned filled 30 event, Bare used his knowledge of the speedway to work the high side to perfection and get his first series win of 2011. Bare started on the outside of the front row. It didn’t take long before he was in the lead and setting the pace. Bare took over the top spot with a power move to the outside of Scott Adams out of turn 2 on lap 4. Once out front Bare showed his old VMS Championship form. Over the final 25 laps Bare had to endure multiple cautions that allowed several competitors to take shots at the lead. On multiple occasions Kyle Lear made attempts to get inside Bare only to be turned away each time. Lear tried several times over the final three laps to get inside Bare for the lead but Bare was too strong and would hold on to take the $3000 top prize in the Firecracker 30. “It feels really good to be back here in victory lane, this team worked extremely hard to fix the problems we were having with this car earlier today, if not for my crew I would not be standing here tonight,” commented bare in victory lane. Rounding out the top five were Derick Quade, Rick Hulson, Scott Adams and Andy Fries. In other action Brian Maxey of king George, VA picked up his fourth win of the season in the Budweiser Modifieds; Stephen Childress of St. Stephens Church, VA cruised to his second eature win in the truckin Thunder Sportman and in the Collision One Limited Stock Car feature Brett Adkins made it two in a row as well as setting a new division track record. In the Budweiser Modified 25 lap feature Tony Quade and Page Harrison led the field to green with Harrison taking the point and leading the first lap. Behind Harrison the battle began to heat up between Quade and Brian Maxey. Maxey would take over the spot with Brandon Galloway and Dan Arnold working their way into third and fourth. The action for the top spot would heat up as Maxey began pressuring Harrison for the top spot. Several cautions closed the field on Harrison, each time he was up to the challenge and kept Maxey at bay. On lap 23 the door opened for Maxey when Harrison hit a rut in turn 2 allowing Maxey to get inside for the lead. Harrison could not recover to retake the top spot and Maxey would go on to record his fourth win of the season followed to the checkers by Harrison, Dan Arnold, Tony Quade and Travis LaRoque. In the Truckin Thunder Sportsman 25 lap feature Junior Carter and Tony Wood led the field to green with Wood taking the top spot. On lap 3 Stephen Childress made it three wide out of turn 2 splitting both Carter and Wood to take over the top spot. Once out front Childress put it on cruise control going on to take his second win of 2011. Following Childress to the checkers were Roger Jamerson, John Kirby, Junior Carter and Wayne Carroll. In the Collision One Limited Stock 20 lap feature it was Brandon Coates and Wesley Givens led the field to green with Givens leading the first lap followed by his father James Givens and sixth starting Brett Adkins in tow. On the next lap Adkins rocketed around Givens out of turn 2 to take over the lead. Once out in front Adkins put it on cruise control as they battled for second behind him. The two Givens and Joe Ender put on a show for the fans on hand as Adkins pulled away. No one had anything for Adkins as he cruised to his second win in a row followed by Joe Ender, James Givens, Wesley Givens and Brandon Coates rounding out the top 5. Bill Sawyer’s Virginia Motor Speedway will take the weekend of July 16th off in preparation the inaugural visit by the Ultimate Super Late Model Series for the $10,000 to win Summer Heat 50. ULTIMATE teams have been buzzing with discussion about this upcoming event. New championship leader Chip Brindle, riding the momentum of his Independence Shootout win at Cherokee Speedway, is just one of the many drivers who have this event circled as a must on their schedule. “The Georgia Bandit” Casey Roberts will be looking to rebound after a rare DNF in the Independence Shootout. Chris “Fergy Time” Ferguson, Ricky Weeks, Daniel Baggerly, Ross Bailes and “Kid Quick” Zack Mitchell are just a few of the drivers who will head north to battle for the $10,000 winner’s check and a total purse exceeding $35,000. The driver’s from the South will have their hands full with a tough contingent of Mid-Atlantic hot-shoes. This is sure to turn into an epic North versus South event. The night’s activities will also include the Victory Lap Late Model, Truckin Thunder Sportsman, Budweiser Modified and the Collision One Limited Stock Car divisions in Virginia Army National Guard Dirt Series action. Competitor gates for Saturday, July 23rd will open at 3pm with spectator gates opening at 4pm. On track activities will begin at 6pm with hot laps. Divisions scheduled to race on Saturday July 23rd: Ultimate Super Late Models (50 Laps); Victory Lap Late Models (35 Laps); Truckin Thunder Sportsman (25 Laps); Budweiser Modifieds (25 Laps); and the Collision One Limited Stock Cars (20 laps). Ultimate Super Late Model Series will run qualifying, heats, B Main(s) and Feature. All track divisions will run Hot Lap Time Trials and Features. Walker Arthur takes Victory Lap Late Model Checkers; Traylor, Maxey and Adkins also get wins

Jamaica, VA – It had been almost a year since Walker Arthur of Forest, VA had been in the starting field of a Victory Lap Late Model feature, but the 2008 Victory Lap Late Model and 2010 Steel Block Bandits champion still knows his way to victory lane as he held off a determined David Williams of Avenue, VA to take home the victory. Arthur led flag to flag but the win did not come without a challenge. Earlier in the night Williams had set a new division track record and pulled a six pill to invert the top six. It only took him eight laps to get to second and have Arthur in his sites. On lap 9 Arthur jumped the cushion allowing Williams to close as the two exited turn 2. On the next circuit Williams looked to the inside of Arthur out of turn 2 only to have Arthur close the door down the backstretch. The two then put on a driving clinic driving through lapped traffic with Williams taking a shot at Arthur at every corner. The two went three wide several times as they worked the slower traffic. On lap 25 Williams got into the back of Arthur out of turn 2 only to have Arthur hold on to the spot. On lap 32 the race third and final caution would fly setting up an eight lap dash for the win. On the restart Arthur was magnificent and pulled away by two car lengths as Williams worked to hold off Scott Adams for second. Arthur would go on to record his first victory at the speedway in over two years. “That was awesome, I saw Williams coming up through the field on the scoreboard and I knew I was going to have my hands full, to be able to get back here in victory lane at Virginia Motor Speedway is really special,” commented Arthur in Victory Lane. Rounding out the top five were David Williams, Scott Adams, Davis Lipscombe and Kenny Moreland. In the Budweiser Modified 25 lap feature Joey Polevoy and Brian Dobie led the field to green with Polevoy taking control and leading the first lap. Behind him Dan Arnold and Brian Maxey begin their march to the front. During the races third caution Polevoy came to stop on front stretch with mechanical problems ending his night and handing lead to Maxey. On the restart Maxey pulled away with Page Harrison in tow. On lap 12 Arnold works his way back to third after falling back to seventh. On lap 21 caution would fly and close the field on Maxey’s bumper. On the restart Arnold tried the outside of Harrison but would get pinched against the backstretch wall allowing Brian Dobie and Tony Quade to get by for position. Maxey would have to endure one more restart but he had enough to hold off Harrison for his third win of 2011. Rounding out the top five were Page Harrison, Brian Dobie, Dan Arnold and Tony Quade. In the Truckin Thunder Sportsman 25 lap feature Junior Carter and Tony Wood led the field to green with Carter leading the first lap followed closely by Wood and Todd Traylor. On the next lap Wood would spin in turn 4 bringing out the caution sending him to the rear of the field. On the restart Traylor would get inside Carter in turn 3 and take the lead at the line. Traylor looked to be on cruise control as he held a sizable lead for the majority of the race. Behind him the battle for second was intense as Carter worked to hold off Roger Jamerson, Michael Roop and Wood. On lap 19 Wood would take second from Carter and set out to real in Traylor. On lap 21 the races final caution would put Wood on Traylor’s bumper for the restart. Traylor would get a good jump on the field but Wood kept the pressure on and as the two headed to the white flag Wood dove under Traylor out of turn 4 only to Traylor hold on to the top spot. Traylor would go on to record his second victory of 2011. Rounding out the top five were Wood, Junior Carter, J.R. Guy and John Kirby. Results for Truckin Thunder Sportsman are still unofficial, at the time of this release the motors of winner Todd Traylor and Tony Wood were being held for further inspection by track officials. In the Collision One Limited Stock 20 lap nightcap Thomas Rose and Brandon Sandridge led the field to green with Thomas leading his first lap of 2011. On the next lap Ender would go to the outside of Thomas out of turn 2 to take over the top spot. On lap the next lap fast qualifier Brett Adkins would spin and be relegated to the rear, a place he wouldn’t stay long. The battles all over the track were tight as Ender worked to keep the top spot. On lap 13 Adkins was back in second and knocking on the door for the lead. On lap 14 Adkins blasted around the outside of Ender out of turn 2 and down the backstretch to take over the lead. Over the remaining laps Adkins would pull away and cruise to his first win of 2011. Rounding out the top five were Joe Ender, Brandon Coates, Thomas Rose and Brandon Sandridge. Heavy Storms Force Cancellation of Racing Action at Virginia Motor Speedway

Jamaica, VA – The night looked promising with a large field of cars in the pit area, but at 6pm a huge storm blew into the area dumping a large amount of rain on the speedway forcing officials of Bill Sawyer’s Virginia Motor Speedway to cancel NAPA of Saluda Night activities. An announcement will be made at a later time as to when NAPA of Saluda Night will be rescheduled. Bill Sawyer’s Virginia Motor Speedway will take with week off at the round track to host the first of two big Mud Bog events for the 2011 season. Saturday June 18th will be a day of Mud Mayhem presented by Rappahannock Tractor and the Virginia Army National Guard at “The Pit”, located on the grounds of Virginia Motor Speedway. The Pit at VMS is a state of the art mud bog facility featuring 200-foot Mud Bog and Mud Sling pits with permanent seating and lighting. There will be eight classes in action ranging from stock to unlimited with cash payouts in all classes. Fans of all ages will be thrilled by the hordes of trucks splashing through the 200 foot Mud Bog pit and ground pounding 1500 horsepower Mud Dragsters covering the 200 foot Mud Sling pit in less than three seconds. Tim Shelton Scores First Ever Victory in Late Model action at Virginia Motor Speedway; Barrick and Childress also first time winners while Enders gets second career win

Jamaica, VA – Mother Nature tired to put a damper on Armed Forces Appreciation Night at Bill Sawyer’s Virginia Motor Speedway but track officials had other ideas getting the track in racing condition with the help of the competitors on hand. Once racing got under way the action got intense on a night that saw three first time winners. In the Victory Lap Late Model 35 lap feature Tim Shelton of Fredericksburg, VA led every lap but it didn’t come easy as Scott Adams, David Williams and Derick Quade all took shots at Shelton for the lead. On lap 6 Williams worked high and low trying to find a way around Shelton. Several times over the next few laps Williams would get a fender inside Shelton but could never make the pass. Shelton would be able to get some breathing room as Adams went to work on Williams for the runner up spot. Williams would jump the cushion in turn 3 on lap 16 allowing Adams to take over the second spot. With the laps winding down Shelton held the top spot while Adams battled Derick Quade for second. With the battle behind him Shelton would go on to record his first ever win in the very competitive Victory Lap Late Models. “This is awesome, we have worked really hard to get to this point and to get a win in this very competitive division,” commented Shelton in victory lane. Rounding out the top five were Scott Adams, Derick Quade, David Williams and John Staton. In other action Curtis Barricks of Chesterfield, VA led every lap of the Budwesier Modified 25 lap feature to record his first ever victory in eight years of racing at Virginia Motor Speedway. The win didn’t come without a challenge as Josh Harris of Gloucester, VA made several attempts to take away the top spot without success. Harris would finish second followed by Lance Grady, Page Harrison and Dan Arnold. In the Truckin Thunder Sportsman 25 lap feature Tony Woods and Roy Skaggs would lead the field to green with Woods leading the first circuit. On lap 3 Stephen Childress and Todd Traylor would get past Skaggs for second and third respectfully. On lap 6 Childress would get inside Woods in turn 4 and take the lead at the line by inches. Once out front Childress began to build a comfortable lead. Woods would make several late race attempts at taking back the top spot but to no avail. The races final caution came out on lap 22 setting up a three lap dash for the cash of which Childress was up for the challenge as he went on to record his first ever victory in the Truckin Thunder Sportsman division. Wood, Traylor, Roger Jamerson and Michael Roop rounded out the top five. In the Collision One 20 lap nightcap Brandon Sandridge and Chad champion led the field to green. Sandridge would briefly take the lead but would jump the cushion in turn 3 allowing Champion to get by and lead the first circuit. Champion’s lead was short lived as on the next lap Joe Ender would get inside Champion in turn 4 to take over the top spot. Ender would quickly get company and Brett Adkins and Ryan Toole pulled up on his back bumper trying to force an error on Enders part. With battles all over the track all eyes seemed focused on the top spot as Adkns began to pressure Ender of the lead. Adkins made several attempts for the lead and each time Ender held him off. The last attempt came on the final lap as Adkins looked to have a good run off turn 4 to get inside Enders only to have Enders hold on to the victory. rounding out the top five were Adkins, Toole, Wesley Givens and Ricky Douglas. Mother Nature forces cancellation of Racing Activities for Saturday May 14th

Jamaica, VA – Heavy rains overnight and during the morning hours have forced officials at Bill Sawyer’s Virginia Motor Speedway to cancel NAPA of Saluda Night featuring week three of Virginia Army National Guard Series action for Saturday May 14, 2011. “We are tremendously disappointed that Mother Nature has forced us to cancel an event this early in the season. But with the amount of rain we received last night, the threat of more severe weather and with the price of gas we feel it is in everyone’s best interest to cancel tonight’s racing program,” commented track General Manager Clarke Sawyer. NAPA of Saluda Night has been rescheduled for June 11th. Jamaica, VA – On Mom’s Night at Bill Sawyer’s Virginia Motor Speedway defending Victory Lap Late Model champion Scott Adams of Chester, VA made sure he gave mom an early Mother’s Day present. Adams made a bold move on Tom Cohick of Gloucester, VA in turn 2 to take over the lead. Adams would be followed by week one winner Derick Quade and Davis Lipscombe as the trio began to pull away from the battle for fourth. Both Quade’s and Lipscombe’s night would come to an early end with mechanical failures. With Adams in complete control the action behind him was fierce as Matt Morgan, Matt Marshall, Tim Shelton and David Williams all swapped position over the final 20 laps. Nothing was going to keep Adams from victory lane, not even a broken left rear shock mount that broke with 15 laps to go. With the left rear just about dragging the track Adams powered his way to his first win of 2011. “I have to thank my dad and Bubba Hubbard for giving me such a great car, I’m just the guy that gets to drive it. This one is for my mom,” commented Adams in victory lane. Following Adams to the checkers were Matt Marshall, eleventh starting David Williams, Matt Morgan and rookie Kenny Moreland. In other action Brain Maxey of King George, VA took home his second win in a row as he made a bold three wide move on lap 8 to take over the lead. Leader Dan Arnold was working lapped traffic with page Harrison and Maxey in tow. As they raced out of turn 2 Arnold got stuck behind a lapped car while Harrison and Maxey worked to his inside. Maxey would take the lead and onec out front began to pull away from the field. With the laps winding down Arnold reeled in Maxey but could never get close enough to mount a serious challenge as Maxey would go on to take the win followed by Arnold, Bret Hamilton, Page Harrison and Brandon Galloway. In the Truckin Thunder Sportsman 25 lap feature the race for the lead was a five man battle until the very end. Roger Jamerson of Mechanicsville, VA would take the lead on the first circuit but would have to hold off several strong challenges by Taylor Doggett, Todd Traylor and Tony Wood. Jamerson would prevail as Wood and Doggett raced side by side for the final lap in a battle for second that Doggett won at the line. The rest of the top five went to Todd Traylor and J.R. Guy. In the Collision One Limited Stock 20 lap feature Wesley Givens of Highland Springs, VA took over the lead on lap 8 in a tight battle between six cars at the front of the field. In the end Givens was strong enough to get the victory over Ryan Toole who made a last lap dash from third for the lead to finish just .361 seconds in second. Ricky Douglas, Brett Adkins and James Givens rounded out the top five. Jamaica, VA – It looked like having the lead in the Victory Lap Late Model 35 lap feature at Bill Sawyer’s Virginia Motor Speedway spelled disaster for anyone that had lead. David Williams, Davis Lipscombe and Matt Marshall all held the lead only to have mechanical issues. But once Derick Quade took over the lead on lap 28 he wasn’t going to let anything take away a shot at victory. The six place starting Quade had worked extremely hard to get to the front and was pressuring marshall for the lead when Marshall spun in front of him on lap 28. JAMAICA, VA – April 17, 2011 – Steve Shaver’s plan worked to perfection in Sunday afternoon’s rain-delayed NAPA of King William ‘Commonwealth 100’ at Virginia Motor Speedway. The 47-year-old veteran from Vienna, W.Va., grabbed the lead from Steve Francis of Ashland, Ky., on lap three and never wavered for the remainder of the distance. He calmly conserved his tires while repelling a pair of threats en route to a World of Outlaws Late Model Series victory worth $25,050. “Our goal was to get the lead early and just try to fend off any challenges, and that’s what we did,” said Shaver, who started fourth driving a Rocket car from the stable of North Carolina’s storied K&L Rumley team. “I just tried to aim for the brown (in the racetrack) and not spin the tires to keep from wearing them out.”...

JAMAICA, VA – April 16, 2011 – With the expected wet, windy weather beginning to strike Virginia Motor Speedway on Saturday morning and hazardous conditions possible throughout the day as well, track and World of Outlaws Late Model Series officials have postponed the evening’s scheduled NAPA of King William Commonwealth 100 to Sunday (April 17). “In the interest of economics and safety for our race fans and competitors, it’s best to just push the race back one day rather than create the unnecessary situation of bringing everyone out to the track to sit through a long day in ugly weather,” said VMS owner Bill Sawyer. “With the conditions that are staring us in the face, both our staff and officials from the World of Outlaws decided the best thing to do was to make the call early and put all our focus on closing out the Commonwealth 100 weekend on Sunday. “We have a great, sunny forecast for Sunday, so it’s going to be a wonderful day for racing.” Sawyer said that his half-mile oval’s gates will open at 2 p.m. on Sunday and hot laps are scheduled to begin at 3 p.m. The $25,000-to-win Commonwealth 100 will then hit the track, followed by the 30-lap, $3,000-to-win ‘Rumble on the River’ Non-Qualifiers’ Race to end the day. The 26-car starting field for the Commonwealth 100 was set through Friday night’s four 15-lap heat races and two 20-lap B-Mains. Heat winners were Austin Hubbard of Seaford, Del., Darrell Lanigan of Union, Ky., Scott Bloomquist of Mooresburg, Tenn., and Steve Shaver of Vienna, W.Va., and the B-Mains were captured by Jeremy Miller of Gettysburg, Pa., and Josh Richards of Shinnston, W.Va. Chris Madden of Gray Court, S.C., who won last year’s inaugural Commonwealth 100, will start from the pole position in his quest for back-to-back triumphs.
