Justin Williams gets ninth Late Model win the hard way; Bare, Marshall, Adkins and Childress also pick up wins

Jamaica, VA – Justin Williams of Shipman, VA swept the outside of race-long leader Brandon Long out of turn 4 heading to the white flag taking over the lead and going on to collect his ninth Victory Lap Late Model win at Bill Sawyer’s Virginia Motor Speedway on Virginia Army National Guard “Salute to the Fallen” Tribute Night. Buck Roadcap and Brandon Long led the field to green with Long taking the top spot out of turn 2. Once out front Long began to pull away while Justin Williams and Billy Tucker battled for second. On Lap 15 Tucker and Williams got together in turn 2 bringing out a caution and sending both to the rear for the restart. With Long dominating up front Williams began his charge back to the front. On lap 27 Williams took over second from John Staton. On the following lap Williams pulled up on Long and then swept to his outside out of turn 4 to take the lead at the white flag. Once out front Williams pulled away to take his ninth win of the season followed by Long, Staton, Tim Shelton and Stephen Childress. Also picking up wins were Matt Marshall (Budweiser Modified); Tyler Bare (Aaron’s Pro Late Models); Brett Adkins (Truckin Thunder Sportsman) and Stephen Childress (Collision One Limited Stocks). After getting called out on Facebook track General Manger Clarke Sawyer and Dave Seay, Director of Sales and Marketing took the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge on the front stretch to the cheers of the fans in the grandstands. The two called out late model driver and crew chief Mark Parks and all the nights’ winners. The speedway would like to thank all of them for participating. Tyler Bare of Rockbridge Baths, VA took the lead from Jared Powell on lap 5. Once out front Bare ran a flawless race and led the remaining 20 laps uncontested on way to his second win of the season. It took two tries to get the feature started and once under green Powell took the lead out of turn 2 with Bare in tow. On lap 4 Bare began looking inside Powell for the lead and got an opening out of turn 4. Once out front Bare pulled away as Powell worked to hold off point leader Bobby Thompson to hold on to second followed by Thompson, Davis Lipscombe and Jimmy Duncan. Matt Marshall of Stuarts Draft, VA inherited the lead on lap 14 when Brian Maxey and Matt Quade got together racing for the lead in turn 2 ending Maxey’s night and sending Qaude to the rear after repairs. Once under green Marshall pulled away from the pack on way to take his second win of the season. Behind him Matt Quade took second at the checkers with an inside pass on Joey Polevoy with Francis Jarrelle III and Josh Harris rounding out the top five. Brett Adkins of Gloucester, VA took the lead on lap 2 of the caution filled Truckin Thunder Sportsman 25 lap feature. Adkins only had to survive multiple restarts on way to dominating the event on way to his fifth win of the season. Rounding out the top five were Hunter Shelton, Timmy Brann, Junior Carter and James Snead. Stephen Childress of St. Stephens Church, VA held off several furious challenges by Ben Lowry to lead the final six laps of the Collision One Limited Stock Car 20 lap to pick up his third win of the season. Andrew Tarbox led the first 11 laps before going for a spin after contact with Childress out of turn 2. Childress would inherit the lead for the restart. Over the remaining 9 laps Childress held off several challenges for the lead from Lowry the last coming on the final turn when the two touched and raced side by side to the checkers. Childress would get the win followed by Lowry, Brandon Sandridge, Ryan Hutchens and Brian Bradley. The speedway will take next weekend off due to the NASCAR races at Richmond International Raceway and return to racing on Saturday September 13th for Safety-Kleen Championship Night presented by WIGO. The night will feature the Victory Lap Late Model, Aaron’s Pro Late Model, Truckin Thunder Sportsman, Budweiser Modified and Collision One Limited Stock Car divisions in the final point race of the 2014 season. The track’s 2014 champions will be crowned in all five Virginia Army National Guard Dirt Series divisions. Competitor gates for Saturday September 13th will open at 4pm with spectator gates opening at 5pm. On track activities will begin at 6:30pm with hot laps and features will start at 8pm. Divisions scheduled to race on Saturday: Victory Lap Late Models (30 Laps); Aaron’s Pro Late Models (25 Laps); Budweiser Modifieds (25 Laps); Truckin Thunder Sportsman (25 laps) and the Collision One Limited Stock Cars (20 laps). All divisions will run Hot Lap Time Trials and Features. Admission price for Adults $12, seniors (60+) $10; military (active/retired w/ proper I.D.) $8, students 13 – 17 years old $6, children 7 to 12 $4 and children 6 and under admitted free. We offer a family pass for $25 (two adults and two children 12 and under). Pit passes will be $20. To enhance the fans racing experience the speedway has installed a short wave FM transmitter and all of the evening’s action can be heard at 95.5 FM.
