Speedway to host Dirtwood Nationals Pinewood Derby and Scout Night Saturday June 30th

Jamaica, VA – If you have ever been involved in a pinewood derby you know how exciting it is not only for the kids but for the adults. On Saturday June 30th Bill Sawyer’s Virginia Motor Speedway will bring that excitement and fun to the speedway as it hosts the inaugural Truckin Thunder Dirtwood Nationals Pinewood Derby presented by the Virginia Army National Guard. “We are extremely excited to host this event and to help raise money and awareness for ChildHelp. We have to thank Tom and Judy Brooks of Truckin Thunder for bringing us this idea, they have been a tremendous sponsor and are a tremendous custodian of the community,” commented General Manager Clarke Sawyer. The event will run as part of Scout Night at the Races and the Speedway’s 4th of July celebration. Gates will open at 3pm for registration with the Dirtwood National Pinewood Derby starting at 4pm. After the Dirtwood Nationals all Scouts (Boy Scouts, Cub Scouts and Girl Scouts) if wearing their uniform will get free admission to enjoy a night of full sized dirt car racing and a huge 4th of July fireworks display that is sure to please the whole family. During the evenings festivities the Speedway will also help in raising money and awareness for the charity ChildHelp®. “I can’t wait for the first Dirtwood Nationals event on June 30th. Pairing a pinewood derby event with a full scale racing night at Virginia Motor Speedway seems a natural. Participants from the local Scouting Community and Virginia Motor Speedway’s racing family will make for a fun-filled evening that also will raise money for one of my favorite charities, ChildHelp®. I feel fortunate to have one of the Child Help Villages here in Virginia. Helping them with their work of rehabilitating and caring for severely abused and neglected children is very important to me,” commented Truckin Thunder owner Tom Brooks. There will be three divisions for the Dirtwood Nationals, Scouts, fans and Virginia Motor Speedway competitors. A champion will be crown in each division and then there will be a run-off to see who will be the overall Dirtwood Nationals Pinewood Derby Champion. Standard Scouting pinewood derby rules will govern the races. For anyone wanting to participate but not having a pinewood derby car, a limited quantity will be available for rent for a $10 donation to ChildHelp. Billy Tucker Gets Career First Win at Virginia Motor Speedway; Adkins Goes Two for Two and Duncan Repeats

Jamaica, VA – In one of the most exciting races of the year Billy Tucker of King George, VA muscled his way inside Scott Adams of Chester, VA on lap 33 to take over the top spot and go on to score his career first victory in the Victory Lap Late Model division at Virginia Motor Speedway. “I’ve been the brides maid so many times here it feels really good to finally get into victory lane,” commented Tucker. After his interview Tucker got on one knee in victory lane and asked his girlfriend Laurie Canter to marry him. She said yes. In other action Brett Adkins of Gloucester, VA doubled up for the second time this season winning both the Truckin Thunder Sportsman and Collision One Limited Stock Car features and in the Budweiser Modified 25 lap feature jimmy Duncan of Fredericksburg, VA made it two in a row with his win. Derick Quade and Will Pritchard led the field to green with Quade taking control out of turn 2. On lap 5 Scott Adams went inside Tucker for second in turn 3, the two touched allowing Tim Shelton to go to the outside and make it three wide for the position. When the dust cleared Shelton was in second with Adams close in third. While the battle for second heated up Quade had moved out to a full straight lead. Once in second Shelton began to reel in the leader but on lap 15 Shelton would head to the pit area with motor troubles ending his night and bringing out a caution. On the restart Quade looked as if he was going to pull away but on the exit of turn four slide high allowing Adams to pull to his inside. The two raced into turn 1 where they touched sending Quade up the track and giving Adams the lead. Adams pulled away to a comfortable lead and looked to be unbeatable. With the laps winding down Tucker began closing on the leader and finally got what he needed, a caution with two laps to go. On the restart Tucker dove under Adams and muscled his way to the lead as the two exited turn 2. Tucker would never look back and would go on to record his career first victory in the division. Rounding out the top five were John Staton, Ben Bowie, Scott Adams and Anthony Kincaid. Brandon Atkinson was the Pitts Lumber rookie of the Race. Truckin Thunder Sportsman Davey Pullen and Brett Adkins led the field to green with Adkins taking the lead out of turn 2. Once out front Adkins pulled away from the field while Junior Carter, Todd Traylor and Taylor Doggett battled for second. Several cautions closed the field on Adkins bumper but on each restart Adkins would pull away while the battle for second heated up. With the laps winding down and Adkins comfortably in the lead Traylor and Doggett battled for second. With the action behind him Adkins went on to score his second win of the season. Rounding out the top five were Todd Traylor, Taylor Doggett, Davey Pullen and Junior Carter. Adkins was also the Pitts Lumber Rookie of the Race. Budweiser Modifieds Curtis Barricks and Chris Arnold brought the field to green with Arnold taking over the top spot to lead the first lap. Jimmy Duncan would get to the front quickly and would power inside Arnold for the lead out of turn 4 on the next lap. Once out front Duncan to pull away from the field with Brian Dobie the only car to stay within striking distance. The only thing to slow Duncan were four cautions that closed the field on his bumper with the final one coming on lap 23. On the final restart Duncan was able to get tow car lengths on Dobie and go on to record his second win in a row at Virginia Motor Speedway. Rounding out the top five were Brian Dobie, Page Harrison, Dan Arnold and Brandon Galloway. Mike Reynolds was the Pitts Lumber rookie of the Race with his eighth place finish. Collision One Limited Stock Cars The Collision One Limited Stock division once again delivered a tremendous race for the great crowd on hand. Bob Terry and Stephen Childress led the field to green with Terry leading the first circuit. On the next lap Childress got under Terry out of turn 4 to take over the lead. Childress would pace the field with Brett Adkins in hot pursuit. On lap 10 Adkins slide under Childress in turn 1 making enough contact to send Childress up the track and take over the lead. That was all Adkins needed as he cruised to his second win of the night. Rounding out the top five were Wesley Givens, Brandon Sandridge, Bob Terry and Bobby Curtis. Curtis was the Pitts Lumber Rookie of the Race. Bill Sawyer’s Virginia Motor Speedway will take with week off at the round track to host the first of two big Mud Bog events for the 2012 season. It’s a chance to win free tickets by correctly guessing the feature winners each week. To earn your chance at free tickets, first you need to “like” the Virginia Motor Speedway Facebook page. You then must make your guesses as to the feature winners in each of the four classes in the appropriate post which will go up every Tuesday. You need to select who you believe will win the feature in the Victory Lap Late Model, Truckin Thunder Sportsman, Budweiser Modified and Collision One Limited Stock divisions. The person with the most correct winners will win a free adult admission ticket to the next regular race program. In the event of ties for correct guesses on winners we will then do a random drawing for the FREE ticket. Persons guessing all four feature winners correctly will automatically win a ticket. The deadline to file your guesses on Facebook will be 3 p.m. the day of the race. Winners will be posted on the Facebook page and on the track website. Your winning ticket can be picked up at the next regular race event at the will call ticket window. The first winning ticket(s) will be given away on May 26, based upon finishes of the May 12th Mom’s Night Out at the Races. The speedway will also give away five (5) pair of tickets to the May 19th Ultimate Super Late Model Series sanctioned Mid-Atlantic Spring Championship if we reach 5000 total “Likes” by May 10th. If we can reach 10,000 “Likes” Virginia Motor Speedway will broadcast the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series sanctioned $20,000 to win USA 100 over the internet, for free.
