Justin Williams Takes Open Night Checkers; C. Arnold, Adkins and Givens Also Pick up Victories

Jamaica, VA – The 2013 season got underway at Bill Sawyer’s Virginia Motor Speedway with some fantastic racing in all divisions. Justin Williams of Shipman, VA took over the top spot on lap 12 with and inside move on David Puckett of King George, VA out of turn 2. Once out front Williams set sail and cruised to his first win in the Victory Lap Late Models. John Staton and David Puckett led the field to green with Puckett grabbing the lead out of turn 2. Puckett paced the first 11 laps with Tim Shelton, Williams, Staton and Joe Ender battling for second. On lap 6 Troy Williams rocketed to third on a restart after a caution. On lap 11 Williams got inside Puckett out of turn and took over the top spot. Once out front Williams began to pull away from Shelton and the rest of the field. When the checkers flew Williams had a cushion of almost eight seconds over Troy Williams. Tim Shelton, John Staton and Joe Ender rounded out the top five. Mark Parks picked up the Fastrak Pro Late Model win with a sixth place finish. Stephen Childress picked up the Pitts Lumber Rookie of the Race award. In other action Chris Arnold of Chester, VA picked up a hard fought victory in the Budweiser Modified division. Brett Adkins of Gloucester, VA passed Hunter Shelton of Fredericksburg, VA on lap 20 to get the lead and the win in the Truckin Thunder Sportsman and in the Collision One Limited Stock Cars Wesley Givens of Mechanicsville, VA passed defending champion Brian Maxey of King George, VA on lap 9 to get the lead and the win. Budweiser Modifieds Matt Quade and Brandon Galloway led the field to green with Galloway taking the lead out of turn 2. On the next circuit Chris Arnold rocketed to the lead with his father Dan Arnold in tow. Arnold paced the field unchallenged until lap 12 when defending champion Jimmy Duncan got inside Arnold in turn 1 to briefly take over the top spot only to have Arnold put a slide job on him in turn 4 to regain the top spot. Once out front Arnold worked traffic masterfully and went on to the win. Jimmy Duncan, Joey Polevoy, Charlie Hubbard and Donnie Smith rounded out the top five. Matt Quade picked up the Pitts Lumber rookie of the Race with a eighth place finish. Truckin Thunder Sportsman Tommy Upshaw and Hunter Shelton led the field to green with Shelton leading the first circuit. Behind Shelton Brett Adkins, Upshaw, Junior Carter, James Snead battle for position in the top five. On lap 16 Adkins closed in on the bumper of Shelton. The two began to battle for the top spot and on lap 20 Shelton slid high coming out of four allowing Adkins to get to the inside and take the lead at the line by inches. Once out front Adkins pulled away to pick up the victory. Rounding out the top five were Hunter Shelton, James Snead, Troy Doggett and Thomas Rose rounded out the top five. James Snead was the Pitts Lumber Rookie of the Race. Collision One Limited Stocks Chris Maxey and Ryan Hutchens led the field to green with Hutchens leading the first lap after battling three wide with Brian Maxey and Bob Terry on the drop of the green. On lap 3 Maxey took over the top spot when Hutchens went to the pits with a flat tire. On the next circuit the Wesley Givens began his assault on the top spot with the two drivers racing door to door. On a lap 8 restart Givens dove under Maxey in turn 1 to take the lead. On lap 12 the caution would fly for a horrific flip by Bob Terry in turn 3 bringing out a red flag as the crew worked to get Terry free from his car. Terry would emerge from his demolished ride ok to the delight of the fans on hand. Once the race got back under green Givens motored away from the field to take the win. Rounding out the top five were Brandon Sandridge, Travis Hopkins, Brian Bradley and Daniel Alford. Brian Bradley was the Pitts Lumber Rookie of the Race with his fourth place finish. The speedway will return to racing next Saturday April 20th to host Virginia Army National Guard Dirt Series Night. The speedway will feature all the divisions in a special “Twin” race format. The evenings events will include four divisions of exciting high octane, side by side dirt track racing. Speedway Releases 2013 Schedule; Focus on Weekly Racing

Jamaica, VA – The tentative 2013 schedule for Bill Sawyer’s Virginia Motor Speedway has been released and includes 12 weeks of Virginia Army National Guard Dirt Series action. The focus for the 2013 racing season will be on weekly racing and continuing to grow our local fan and competitor base. During the 12 weeks of Virginia Army National Guard Dirt Series action the speedway will feature six nights of the very popular twin race format that was utilized during the last part of the 2012 season. Fans and competitors alike were thrilled with the format and have asked to see more of it in 2013. The track’s always competitive weekly divisions begin their race for the division Championships and the Virginia Army National Guard Dirt Series Championship on Saturday April 13th and end with the final point’s race of the season on Saturday September 14th. This year’s division line-up will once again include the Victory Lap Late Models, Truckin Thunder Sportsman, Budweiser Modifieds and the Collision One Limited Stock Cars. One special event tentatively on the 2013 schedule is the return of the Ultimate Super Late Model Series on Saturday May 18th. Details of that event will be released soon. Along with the weekly racing action the speedway will also host two mud bogs at its state of the art mud bog facility. On Saturday June 15th The Pit at VMS will host the 4th Annual Mud Mayhem and on Saturday October 5th the 9th Annual Run-A-Muck Mud Bog and Mud Sling presented by James River / Rappahannock Tractor and the Virginia Army National Guard. Fan Promotion Huge Success with Help of Virginia Motor Speedway Drivers

Jamaica, VA – For two weeks prior to the Saturday August 18th historic Scout Night at the Virginia Motor Speedway, competitors at the high-speed half-mile clay oval handed out free passes to their family members, friends and co-workers to invite them out to watch them race. What followed was a record setting weekly audience for the facility. An estimated crowd of nearly 4,000 people packed the facility for a picture-perfect night of racing which included a twin race format that excited all those in attendance. “This was a really successful promotion that we hope will lead to larger crowds at all of our future events. We have been inundated with emails and phone calls from first time visitors that really enjoyed themselves and we want to thank everyone that participated in the promotion,” commented track General Manager Clarke Sawyer. After sorting and counting nearly 2,200 free passes, Virginia Motor Speedway officials are pleased to announce the top recruits and winners of some fantastic awards. The Victory Lap Late Model division produced the top two recruiters with Joe Ender of Glen Allen, VA topping all drivers with 274 fans filtering through the gates with a free pass embellished with his name and car number. The Victory Lap Late Model leading rookie will receive a set of tires courtesy of Hoosier Tire Mid-Atlantic. Tim Shelton of Fredericksburg, VA finished a close second with 255 passes returned and will receive twenty gallons of Sunoco Racing Fuel courtesy of Hank Thomas Performance. Speedway to host Dirtwood Nationals Pinewood Derby and Scout Night Saturday June 30th

Jamaica, VA – If you have ever been involved in a pinewood derby you know how exciting it is not only for the kids but for the adults. On Saturday June 30th Bill Sawyer’s Virginia Motor Speedway will bring that excitement and fun to the speedway as it hosts the inaugural Truckin Thunder Dirtwood Nationals Pinewood Derby presented by the Virginia Army National Guard. “We are extremely excited to host this event and to help raise money and awareness for ChildHelp. We have to thank Tom and Judy Brooks of Truckin Thunder for bringing us this idea, they have been a tremendous sponsor and are a tremendous custodian of the community,” commented General Manager Clarke Sawyer. The event will run as part of Scout Night at the Races and the Speedway’s 4th of July celebration. Gates will open at 3pm for registration with the Dirtwood National Pinewood Derby starting at 4pm. After the Dirtwood Nationals all Scouts (Boy Scouts, Cub Scouts and Girl Scouts) if wearing their uniform will get free admission to enjoy a night of full sized dirt car racing and a huge 4th of July fireworks display that is sure to please the whole family. During the evenings festivities the Speedway will also help in raising money and awareness for the charity ChildHelp®. “I can’t wait for the first Dirtwood Nationals event on June 30th. Pairing a pinewood derby event with a full scale racing night at Virginia Motor Speedway seems a natural. Participants from the local Scouting Community and Virginia Motor Speedway’s racing family will make for a fun-filled evening that also will raise money for one of my favorite charities, ChildHelp®. I feel fortunate to have one of the Child Help Villages here in Virginia. Helping them with their work of rehabilitating and caring for severely abused and neglected children is very important to me,” commented Truckin Thunder owner Tom Brooks. There will be three divisions for the Dirtwood Nationals, Scouts, fans and Virginia Motor Speedway competitors. A champion will be crown in each division and then there will be a run-off to see who will be the overall Dirtwood Nationals Pinewood Derby Champion. Standard Scouting pinewood derby rules will govern the races. For anyone wanting to participate but not having a pinewood derby car, a limited quantity will be available for rent for a $10 donation to ChildHelp.
