Speedway Cancels Racing Activities for Saturday, June 11

Jamaica, VA – After much discussion and thought, speedway management has decided to cancel racing activities for Saturday, June 11, due to the high probability of rain for the weekend. “We have a lot of competitors and fans who travel an enormous amount of highway miles to attend and compete in our events,” said track owner Bill Sawyer. “With the current gas prices facing our fans and competitors, we don’t want anyone to have the burden of making a long trip for nothing and spending money that need to be used on other items during the week.” The Speedway will take Father’s Day weekend off and return to racing Saturday, June 25, to host week 4 of Dirt Series Championship weekly racing. The night will feature the Victory Lap Pro Late Models, Budweiser Modifieds, Truckin Thunder Sportsman, and Collision One Limited Stock Cars. King Of The Commonwealth Refund Instructions

JAMAICA, VA – Virginia Motor Speedway officials want to first thank all the fans, competitors, and sponsors that made Virginia Is For Racing Lovers King of the Commonwealth happen, even though it was shortened by rain. The refund instructions are as follows. – For those wanting a refund, please send your ticket stubs to the track and to the attention of Bill Sawyer and we will send you a check. Or, bring them to the ticket office at our next event to get your refund. Anyone that bought advance tickets through our MyRacePass link will have their refund automatically deposited in their accounts by end of Wednesday. – Pro Late Model and Sportsman competitors can exchange their pit pass wristbands at our next event (June 11). For any Pro Late Model competitors that are not weekly competitors, you can send your wristbands in but, they must be accompanied by your name and car number. ...

Ross Bailes Wins Rain-Shortened Virginia Is For Racing Lovers King of the Commonwealth at Virginia Motor Speedway

Jamaica, VA – What looked to be a good night of racing ended with rain shortening the event and Ross Bailes of Clover, SC, being declared the winner of the $20,000 to win in the Virginia Is For Racing Lovers King of the Commonwealth after only 23 laps of racing. Track owner Bill Sawyer decided that he would pay everyone as if they had completed the full 60 laps. On the drop of the green flag, pole-sitter and defending champion Brandon Overton shot out to the lead. Overton held a 10-car-length advantage over Bailes as the two raced into traffic. Overton worked traffic efficiently for several laps before contact with a lapped car allowed Bailes to get by for the lead on lap 17. Two laps later, a caution fell when Jeff Smith slowed in turn 2, bringing out a caution. On the restart, Bailes pulled away from Zack Mitchell and held the lead until rain brought the field to a red flag. The rain persisted to the point that the track had no choice but to call the race as completed with Bailes, the winner. Rounding out the top five were Zack Mitchell, Ben Watkins, Kenny Moreland, and Dale Hollidge. A decision on the FASTRAK Pro Late Model and Truckin Thunder Sportsman features will be made at a later date. The speedway will take the Memorial Day weekend off and the following weekend and return to racing on Saturday, June 11 and host week 3 of Dirt Series Championship weekly racing. Speedway to Host the $20,000 to win King of the Commonwealth This Saturday, May 21

Jamaica, VA –Some of the region’s top dirt late model talent will converge on Virginia Motor Speedway for one of the year’s biggest events, the $20,000 to win Virginia Is For Racing Lovers King of the Commonwealth, this Saturday, May 21 at Bill Sawyer’s Virginia Motor Speedway. will host the largest short track event in the State of Virginia. The event will be sanctioned by the Ultimate Super Late Model Series and will feature an A-Main, paying the winner a cool $20,000. The event will also feature a $3000 to win FASTRAK Racing Series race for Pro Late Model competitors as well as the Truckin Thunder Sportsman in Dirt Series Championship action. “If you are a fan of short track racing you do not want to miss this event; the best dirt late model racers on the East Coast will be vying for that huge $20,000 check in one of the biggest short track events in the State of Virginia,” commented track owner Bill Sawyer. 13th Annual Mud Mayhem Mud Bog at The Pit Postponed Due to Weather

Jamaica, VA – With the forecast calling for rain and possible thunderstorms today and tomorrow, officials at The Pit at Virginia Motor Speedway have decided to postpone the 13th Annual Mud Mayhem Mud Bog presented by Breezeline to a day to be determined. “We hate to have to postpone the mud bog, but with the amount of rain we have already had and the wet weekend forecast, we have to think of the safety of our competitors and fans,” commented General Manager Clarke Sawyer. Sawyer added, “we will look at the schedules of mud bog events in the Mid-Atlantic region and find a date that does not conflict with any of those events. JUSTIN WILLIAMS INHERITS LEAD AND VICTORY IN PRO LATE MODEL ACTION; ARNOLD, SHELTON, AND MAXEY ALSO SCORE WINS

Jamaica, VA – Sometimes it’s better to be lucky than good, on this night, Justin Williams of Concord, VA, was both. With three laps to go in the Victory Lap Pro Late model feature, race leader Ray Love Jr. Of LaPlata, MD, succumbed to mechanical issues handing a fast closing Williams of Concord, VA, the lead and the win. “We were closing on the top side with the laps winding down, it was going to be close, but I believe Ray (Love) would have been able to hold me off for the win,” commented Williams in Virginia Is for Racing Lover’s victory lane. Love and Corey Almond led the field to green, with Love grabbing the lead on the opening lap. Behind him, the race for second was three wide with Almond, Williams, and Austin Hubbard. On lap 4, Williams got past Almond for second, with Love already checked out on the field. Love worked traffic to perfection, keeping the Williams at a distance. Behind him, the race for fourth was hot and heavy between Hubbard and Trevor Collins. By lap 25, Williams had jumped to the cushion and looked to be gaining on Love with five laps to go, but on lap 27, a puff of smoke came from under the hood of Love’s #08, handing the lead and win to Williams. Rounding out the top 5 were Corey Almond, Trevor Collins, Austin Hubbard, and Matthew Hildebrand. It only took Tim Shelton of Fredericksburg, VA, nine laps to take the lead from Matt Meads of Elizabeth City, NC, in the Truckin Thunder Sportsman 25 lap feature; once he did, Shelton only had to hold off a late charge by Tyler Shipp of Mechanicsville, VA to take the victory. Meads and Shipp would lead the field to green, with Meads leading the first lap. Shelton got by Shipp on lap on lap six and began closing in on Meads, your leader. On lap 8, Shelton went to the outside of Meads to take the lead out of turn 2. With 5 to go, Shipp took one more shot for the lead, but Shelton was able to hold him off and go on to his second victory in as many races. Shipp, Meads, Brett Adkins, and Wesley Givens rounded out the top five finishers. In the Budweiser Modified 25 lap feature, Chris Arnold of Matoaca, VA, took over the lead from Jeff Solinger of Bumpass, VA, on lap seven and went on to a dominant win. Arnold set fast time but pulled a six pill and relegated himself to starting sixth. On the drop of the green, Solinger jumped out to the lead while the battle for fourth went three-wide with Arnold, defending Champion Chase Butler, and Joey Polevoy. Arnold would take the spot and set out to reel in Josh Harris, who was running in second. On lap 4 Arnold got by Harris for second with the leader in his sights. The next two laps saw Arnold trying the outside, unable to get by, he switched to the bottom and was able to get by out of turn 2. Once out front Arnold pulled away and never looked back to score the victory. Rounding out the top 5 were Jeff Solinger, Chase Butler, Lance Grady, and Brent Bordeaux. In the Collision One Limited Stock Car 20 lap feature Brian Maxey of Fredericksburg, VA, took the lead on lap eight from Brandon Brown of Gloucester, VA, never looking back to score his second victory in a row. Once out front, Maxey was set on cruise while Bowler and Cory Bradley battled for second. With the racing behind him, Maxey went on to the win. Rounding out the top 5 were Brandon Bowler, Cory Bradley, Justin Pullen, and Jacob Buie.
